Fluid and Electrolytes - basic facts needed please!!

Today in lecture we were given a research project. The instructor said it was fair game to collaborate with our colleagues, so I was hoping to get some help from my colleagues on here! Our group came up with answers for the other +/- 80 q's. Here goes:

1. 60 - 99% (is this a typo?) of the body tissues are made up of the compound __________.

18. Fluids shift between the extracellular and the intracellular fluid compartments by means of _________ and _________.

19. An imbalance in the composition of extracellular fluid means an ______ or a __________ of an electrolyte.

21. A term used to describe the concentration of the body fluids is ______.

28. The simplest and most accurate ways to monitor fluid balance are ________ and ________.

52. Hypokalemia can potentiate the effects of the drug ________.

65. Deceptively low calcium levels can occur when there is a decreased ________ level.

81. In a patient with chronic retention of C02, the respirations will be stimulated by low levels of ________.

We've had some good guesses on some of the above, but I just can't seem to find some of the more obvious ones anywhere. Thanks in advance for the help!!

okay, these are just guesses because I haven't read your book, but here goes.....

18. osmosis, diffusion?

19. increase, decrease?

28. My teacher always stressed wieght as a big indicator

52. Digoxin

81. Oxygen?

Let me know how things go!

Okay, I've dug a bit deeper and have the answers for #'s 32, 56 and 83. Any other help would be greatly appreciated!

28. intake/output

21. osmolality

81. oxygen

1. H2o?

1. water

2. osmosis, cellular transport?

21. osmolality

28. daily weights, I+O

52. digoxin

65. parathyroid hormone?

81. Oxygen

1. water but I'm not sure.

18. osmosis and diffusion?.

19. surplus or defiency?

21. Tonicity is the effect of a solution's osmotic pressure on water movement across the cell membrane of cells within that solution. Example...hypertonic solutions have a greater concentration of solutes than plasma. I think this question is asking about tonicity.

28. I&O and daily weights.

52. Digoxin...just learned about this in school.

65. Not sure what the teacher wants here...low magnesium, phosphate, PTH, ionized calcium...can all cause hypocalcemia.

81. Oxygen. The body usually uses how much CO2 you are holding as the stimulation for respirations. In chronic COPD, it uses O2 because of chronically elevated CO2 levels. This is why you closely monitor a person with COPD on oxygen. If the O2 is too high, it could depress the respiration center and cause the COPD person to cease breathing.

Maybe this helps.

isotonic

21. A term used to describe the concentration of the body fluids is ______.

UPDATE:

Thanks everyone for your input. Some more answers have come in from other members of my class, so for the sake of interest, I thought I would post them here. I double checked the answers in the Weldy F&E book, and well as our med/surg theory text (Smeltzer/Bare):

1. Still unknown, but assuming that the 99% is a typo, water seems to be the favorite. I'll let you know when I find out on Tuesday.

21. osmolality

28. daily wieghts and I&O

52. This one came as a surprise. Our initial guess was also digoxin, but we found in our text that it's actually digitalis.

65. This one's still not clearly spelled out anywhere, but the front runner is albumin

81. Everyone said oxygen for this one, and yes, it is oxygen

18 & 19 are still a mystery. I'll update you again when I get the skinny on them. Thanks again to everyone for your input!!!
