Favorite Classes

Nursing Students General Students

Hello!

Just thought that we needed a new and funner thread because I know that we are all so stressed and excited about the upcomming semester. I am wondering what all of your favorite classes were. Aside from the sciences and nursing classes, what class did you really enjoy?

Mine was during my first semester of pre-reqs. It was Sociology. I loved that class. The professor was so wonderful and got us so involved in the class. We actually had an assignment where we had to do something out of "the norm" in public and write a paper on the peoples reactions. I ate my lunch at a cafe while having my hand raised the entire time I was there. The reactions were priceless. Another guy in my class used his hands at the salad bar, his paper was great.

So how about all of you? :)

Specializes in Telemetry, Stepdown.

My favorite was Developmental Psychology. I had an awesome teacher and the class always had excellent discussions.

I always enjoyed psych classes. I had the same instructor for general psych and developmental psych. However, I was quite disappointed in the developmental psych class. I thought it would be more fun, but instead it was mostly factual information. But my favorite class was anatomy and physiology.

Specializes in Emergency.

Hmmmm... not science & not nursing, I would have to say psych too. I LOVED A&P I & II !! Hated Microbioloby which I just finished on the 14th.

I have enjoyed most all of my prereq's... anthropology was great... it has given me a desire to go into cultural nursing. I really enjoyed my history classes... it was neat to finally put all of that stuff that I knew into the right time line. I loved my writing classes and found out that I have a knack for writing... even earned myself a scholarship with an essay.

My first class of my college career was a computer class... and it was taught by a 'friend' of mine. We had been in a club together and always had fun together... she didn't know I was in her class, and her name was not on my class list. It was a nice surprise and made me have fun on my first day. She even took me to my next class and introduced me to my instructor. It really started me off on a good note.

I've loved going back to school. My husband is sure that I won't stop with my BSN... I'm having too much fun!

It has to be non-science or nursing?

Then I would have to say a class I took 5 years ago when I was working on my first degree. The name of the class was "Philosophy of Evolution and Creation". It was taught by a minister, however, he did present both sides. He is a Creationist (as am I) but he was very fair in how he presented the other side. IN FACT he was much more fair than evolutionist teachers I have had in classes where that should not have even been a part of it.

We even got to go to a place about 2 hours away from there where dinosaur bones had been found. They have a little place there where you can did for fossils in a creek bed. That was a lot of fun. We also had some really good disscussions about why people believe what they believe and defending your belief.

It was really a great class! (although, I guess some could say it is a science class - but it was an ethics/philosophy credit so it qualifies!!!!)

As for science classes - I would have to say Microbiology! My teacher was actually a microbiologist. Granted, some did not like the class but that is because 9 out of 30 got an F a couple more got a D, there were a few Cs a couple Bs and then 4 of us got an A! (I got an A) I thought the class was fun...it was very hands on. The ones of us that got As tried to help the ones that didn't do well. They just didn't get it, no matter how we put it. They aren't dumb - they did well in other classes. Not sure what the problem was there. Anyways - I loved the class! (hehehe - although it was a long time before I was able to eat out again - he used to be a restaraunt inspector)

Loved my Radical Ideas in Education class. We covered the radical visionaries like Kozol, Bowles & Gintis (socialist education) & Paulo Freire (wrote Pedagogy of the Oppressed, a book that changed my life).

What made the class incredibly cool was the prof taught the class in a radical way...by treating students as co-participants who shaped the class as much as he did. We even chose our own grade. On top of that the prof was a great teacher...warm, caring and with a big smile. He loved to teach & he positively glowed in class.

At the end of the sememster, the students threw a party for him because we loved him so much. I don't mind that it's been downhill after that because I am sooooo lucky that I met that man. If I ever become a nurse educator, I want to be like him.

Thanks for the thread...you brought back a great memory.

There are a couple of non-science classes I have enjoyed, those being...

Critical Reading and Writing...the prof was really a neat, neat person. He was able to provide me with an important tool, too, that I am sure will come in handy in the next few years (about supporting claims). Plus, we had to do a portfolio for the class that included assignments, notes, etc. He gave me a wonderful compliment when he told me that my notes were outstanding and that I could either sub for him or be a guest lecturer in one of his classes!

Shakespeare...this class was SO small, I think there were usually 4 people there on any given day. The most we ever had was probably 7! It really wasn't that hard, and most of the assignments that were on the syllabus the prof dropped. She was really old, and so cute and nice. She grew up speaking only French (can you imagine?!). That was just a fun class!

Algebra I...I loved my teacher! She has probably been my favorite teacher out of all of them. She is in her mid 30's, has 2 kids, was a high school dropout (like me!) and has a doctorate. She was one of those people who you just know if the situation had been different she could have been a good friend! Plus, I am not afraid of math, and some of it I actually like. I got the highest grade in that class!

Of the sciences, my favorite was Micro. I think I got the only A in that class :D . I loved the experiments, and growing things. There was so much information and it is something we will use. It was just a fun class, and I had a nice prof who kind of reminded me of my dad!!

I've loved all classes I've taken related to math or computers... if I wasn't going into healthcare, I'd probably be ending up with a computer science/engineering degree.

I think I have enjoyed English the most. English is my second language, and I never really did very well in this subject growing up. But since I have returned to college, I find that I enjoy writing a lot because it allows me to both be creative and express my feelings at the same time. It's also nice to do well in a subject that I struggled with before. B.T,.H

My favorite class so far has to be western civ. Loved the class. I also enjoyed English. I am looking forward to taking sociolgy in the fall.

child psych! :)
