Failed Lab today...

The thing that makes it really crappy is that I was soooooooooooo close to passing. I was really struggling in the lab exams but managed to pick my grade up. Today I needed a 9/10 on the exam and pass my suction checkoff the first time through. I studied my brains out and went to open lab numerous times to practice suctioning and even though I got a 9/10 and almost ran through my checkoff perfectly I set my saline cap facing down and failed. I didn't know this was wrong and wish in instructor would have pointed that out in open lab. I mean, its nobodys fault but mine but it just sucks so bad.

Now I have no direction in life

Do you get another chance? We had 3 chances to get it right....

I feel your pain.. I too failed my suction lab the first time and I was the ONLY one to fail. Dont give up just study and you will get it the next time...I did. I am now having major TROUBLE starting an IV but I am not gonna let it get the best of me.:D

Shoot! I'm a RN and still have trouble starting an IV! LOL! And as far as drawing blood? Haha! Need serious practice there... don't worry... you'll get it! :)

I am sorry. I am assuming it was breaking sterile field?? Our skill labs are run a little differently then most I think. They just made some changes with our semester. I got my first F though and then got another one this semester and it really just about broke me. I have never got a F period. I am not a straight A student. Shoot not even honor role, but have done well thus far. It was stupid errors on those 2 tests though, not even knowledge stuff. I started a series of books and let myself get so distracted. Anyway, sorry not trying to make this about me, just trying to let you know your not alone. Where do you go from here? Are you out of the program? (not sure from your last line)I hope things get better for you.

When I attempted IV's in the lab, I missed the vein twice, when I tried it in a real person I got my sticks right on! its way different then the dummy, same with foleys!

Now back to the IV... on my 2nd stick I forgot to put pressure above the site before taking the tourniquet out, needles to say.... the bed that I had just changed was now bright and bloddy

Does that mean you fail the the entire semester? That doesn't seem fair. Lots of people failed lab procedures in my class, but they were all given a chance to redeem themselves.

And let me tell you something... I've been an RN for a whilw now and I STILL ask questions on how to do things/am clueless during certain procedures. You wont be expected to remember all of the small details in the "real world". Let us know how it goes! :-D

Haha! I just did that last week! LOL!

By failing lab I fail the semester and I have to wait a whole year and repeat the semester... plus it is my first of two strikes in the program. I am so angry. I am not one to blame others but I know, from all the time I was in open lab practicing, if one instructor would have told me about not setting my cap down I would have known and incorporated it into my checkoff. I would have passed but instead I failed and there was nothing I could have done about it because I would not know about that one part of the process. It sucks... three years of hard work stopped for a freaking cap :(

p.s. There is a chance that they may let me do a make up assignment but it may just be a rumor. Keep your fingers crossed for me. I don't think I deserve to fail... I have an A in theory!!!!!!!

by the way... thanks for everyones replys :)

Don't give up your dream. You can do this. Or find another program.

morningland....that just plain sucks. I am also sorry this happened to you as I think it's every student's nightmare to fail a check-off! I really hope they give you a make-up assignment so you can continue! Let us know how it goes and I will keep you in my prayers!
