Clueless Students

Nursing Students General Students

Ever happen to hear conversations between advisors/professors and clueless students? Sometimes I'm just amazed at how clueless some people really are about nursing? They annoy me so much because they think they can just breeze through the program. Anyway this is what I heard when a student in my school was transferring over from the pharmacy program.

Advisor: So you're interested in our nursing program, can you tell me why?

Student: I feel I have a better chance at getting into this program than pharmacy or physician assistant.

Advisor:..okay, can you tell me what a nurses job is?

Student: Alot of dirty work mainly, cleaning people, changing beds.

Advisor: What else?

Student: They answer to doctors.

Advisor: What type of nurse do you want to be?

Student: The type that's in a hospital...

Advisor:........I think you might want to consider a backup major.

Specializes in Telemetry.

Ha ha ha ....This sucks! This student seems not to have a sense of direction. Oh boy, it is sad.

Specializes in ICU.

Sounds like "Clueless" reallllly wants to be a nurse! If they started the nursing program, I predict that they'd drop out pretty quickly.

Specializes in Case management, occupational health.

These are exactly the students that the instructors try to (and succeed) weed out during the first month.

Specializes in Alzheimers and geriatric patients.

I've heard similar conversations. I just hope nobody like that gets a spot in the nursing program that could have went to someone who actually wanted to be a nurse- not using it as a backup for the program they want to be in.

A lot of students do this in my school (mainly for the same reason this student is, the pharmacy program is very cut throat) and even students that aren't as clueless as this one in which they know what nursing is but they have no idea what they are getting themselves into as far as the program. Some don't know that we have a clinical in the first semester or even know what the hell a clinical is for that matter when it's all listed right there on the website. I hear that after the first semester the program loses close to 10 or 15 people (they accept over 100 for the fall and spring each) and I can believe this might be a key reason why.
