Hey everyone, I just wanted to get a thread started for all of the BHC/MVC students; please help me get a support system going here. I am starting at BHC in Jan. 07 and would love to make... Read More

    wannabeanrn,

What color scurbs/shoes do you wear? Are they the same every semester? Do have to buy a particular brand of medical equipment? I was looking at scopes, and bp monitors, but was afraid I would get the wrong kind. Can you use an electronic bp monitor?

I am so glad your in and doing well. I hope I do as well. Also I depend heavily on financial aid. Are there a lot of costs prior to the start of school before fin aid kicks in? I have already gotten my physical, and all of my shots except the last 2 hep B's which I will get number 2 in 2 weeks, and the last one in July.

Our scrubs are white (yuck!) and you do have to get them embroidered...they'll give you the name of a place to get it done. You can buy your pants anywhere; it doesn't matter what brand, they just have to be white. Any scope will do; I purchased a littman and it seems to be a popular brand in my class. But some have a generic and it works well, too. I purchased a bp cuff and I'm glad that I did. It was a hard concept for me and I needed a lot of at home practice. Most of this stuff they will cover in success camp, so don't worry too much yet And no electric bp...they want you to know how to do it the old fashioned way. I don't think there were too many extra costs prior to school, but I do remember some people had to put off buying items because they were waiting for money. Good luck to you! Keep us posted

You do not need a BP monitor. It is up to you what kind of stethoscope you would like. I have a littman Master Classic II and really like it. But you do not have to get one that expensive. I bought mine off of e-bay so it was much cheaper. White Scrubs but the top needs to be embroidered with the school logo and your name so it is cheaper to just buy the top at the place that does the embroidery, pants you can get any where. I buy most of my books on line or Half Price books. It is very expensive but you can get around many of the cost.

White????? How do you guys keep them looking good throughout your shift with all you do? I do not own a single white item of clothing because I always dribble a bit of coffee, or something within the first hour of getting dressed. I guess I am going to have to learn to be more careful or look like a slob for a year and half. lol

Can anyone recommend any good teachers at BHC? How do you find a study buddy? Did you work while taking the pre reqs? What did you guys use to study for the HESI?

Truthfully I haven't had any bad teachers while at BHC. I'm not sure what specific classes you want suggestions for, so let me know and I can tell you who I had. I found most of my study friends just by talking to ppl in class; you'll meet a lot of students who are in the same boat as you and you just connect. A lot of the ppl I met along the way are in the program with me now and it's great to see familiar faces.
I did work part time and it didn't hurt my grades. As for the HESI, I decided the year before I applied for the program to take it as a "practice" test-to see what was on it and figure out how I should study for it. Well, I did well on it and ended up just keeping that score for my application . There are study guides in the library, so that can be helpful. HTH!

I started looking a stethoscopes online yesterday. I am torn between the Littman master classic, and the cardiology III. Has anyone tried both of them, and found one to be a lot better?

I have the Littman Master Classic II( I really like it) . I have tried the Cardiology not sure which one but it was very clear and easy to hear every sound. It was much more expensive. You can go to like Majors and they will let you try out the different stethoscopes in the store.

Thanks for that info. This is really good advice. I'm looking for good teachers when it comes to the biology and micro and A&P. But so far at BHC I haven't had bad teachers either. I just think some can explain themselves better than others can.

Thanks for the info. I started reading reviews and some people said it was clearer, but others not to much clearer. Still others said that the clarity wasn't necessary for what we needed to do. I started thinking about it, and decided that if I was going to spend extra money I would like to spend it on a stethoscope cause I could use it for years to come. I am also concerned I will be one of those people who will have trouble discerning sounds and need all the help I can get lol. I think I will go to majors and test them out for myself and see.

I had Dr. Sokhansanj(forgive my spelling)...Dr. "S" as we called her for A&P I and II. I loved her. I had first began A&P with Daniels, but didn't like his teaching so I dropped and then took both A&PI and then !! consecutively over the follwing Summer I and II semesters and got them out of the way quickly. I had Thaxton for Patho. she's a little tough, but I survived it-and somehow I got by taking Patho. BEFORE A&P which I would never suggest. I had Mason this semester for Micro. at first, I thought she was tough, but I've come to realize she will help you with anything as long as you keep her informed on what you need. She's a really nice person, and so is Terri Canaris. For CHEM I took it through NorthLake and entirely online. I purchased a at-home kit for the experiments. It was a little pricey at $170. But, I'm horrible at math, and passed the class. You can go to: www.ratemyprofessor.com to check out what fellow students are saying about thier professors. Good Luck!

    Connie,

I noticed you took Chem online at NL. I'm thinking of doing the same. How was it? Do you recommend it?

    Thanks~
