Anybody actually like nursing school?

I'm getting very nervous about starting NS in three weeks. I understand it's difficult and the workload is grueling; but did anybody enjoy it? I've read countless horror stories about instructors out to get students and bad experiences in clinicals; I'd like to know if anyone had a positive experience? Or, is there anybody who got into nursing school and found that it wasn't as horrible as the stories they heard beforehand?

It has been nothing even close to the horror I imagined (although, I have a pretty vivid imagination :) ).

Other than the fact that I am really, really, tired of studying at this point, I would rate the overall experience as a good one. I NEVER could have believed that based on my first semester, which I found very horrible, just because it was a big adjustment.

I can't say enough about the instructors I had, we have a GREAT class with the nicest people, and it is SO darn cool to be learning this stuff! The rush that accompanied my first successful IV insertion is darn near beyond compare :chuckle .

Try to relax, and not base your feelings about starting school on other people's experiences. Also, I remember someone telling me when I started not to be in such a hurry to get done, and just enjoy the process. When I am all stessed out, that it exactly what I try to do!

Best wishes for a great first year.

I am having the time of my life in school. It is not as hard, grueling, or stressful as I have seen described. Yes, its stressful to a point--doing something new for the first two, three, four times is not easy. But keep a clear head and realize you are there to learn. Everyone starts out the same way in the same shoes. The instructors are like anyone else in any other place of business, some are great and some....well, someone has to graduate at the bottom of their class ;)

I love going to school. Its the best thing I ever did and yes, its FUN!

Everyone makes it sound worse tha it really is. My exams have been easy as long as you attend class and study your notes. Clinical is grueling (12 hr shifts) but certainly not academically challenging. Overall it is def not as bad as people around here make it sound. Learning is fun!

those are long clinicals! Mine are 9 hours.

I love having the chance to even be in school. Any crap some instructors or nurses give me is nothing compared to the joy of being able to get an education.

I absolutely love it! There has been none of the horror I heard about. Of course, there are conflicts and lots of hard work.

The worst part so far has been classmates who gripe and whine about the silliest things. Be prepared to enter a program where you would expect adults but find children. (I'm sure not all classes are like this, though.)

My instuctors have been excellent. Not a one wants you to fail, and will spend anytime you need helping you.

The only students who are failing or doing poorly, are either not studying, not coming to class, or have serious personal problems to contend with.

You'll do great and I'm sure you'll love nursing school. Just work hard, don't let the pettyness get to you, and you'll succede.

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I get more and more nervous the closer the start date gets. I am normally a good student and usually in the top one or two in my classes - especially science classes. But I feel very intimidated and inadequate because I haven't worked as a CNA or in healthcare. Thanks again!

I agree. It wasn't as bad as I thought, but there were the adults who acted like children and wanted to be spoonfed (Can you tell us what's on the test?).

Even the teacher we swore was out to get us wasn't that bad in the end. When I did my final eval with her (she was my last clinical instructor thru nursing school), she told me "My goal is to get you guys out there, and then have you guys come back and teach".

Most people in my class have no medical experience and they do just fine, don't worry about that. I am lucky in my program because we don't have professors who want us to fail or weed us out. They treat us with respect, they tell us from day one that we are their future collegues and treat us as such. My big problem is burnout, I am so tired of school and I have a whole year to go still. We go to school year-round until we are done.

Stay on top of your studies, ask questions if you don't understand, find a few good "study buddies." You will do well!

I LOVE nursing school! Not only do I enjoy it, I find it fun! The stress level is not too high, nor is the workload. I find it very manageable w/ a family.

Remember, tho, take care of yourself while in school. Enough sleep, eat right, stay hydrated, some excercise - all help to keep the stress level down.

Good luck!

HATED IT!

But not because of the workload. That wasn't too bad.

It was the lowsy cliquy way the students treated each other. I was so naive to think that it would stop when I got into nursing as a profession_ cuz boy it didn't :o
