a big high and a big low, all in one day...

Big high: Yay! I got accepted to nursing school! I have the funds to enter in August '05. Seems so far away but I have to save up since I won't be able to work full time, and we live in an expensive city. And I still have half my general Ed classes to take. So they guaranteed me a spot that semester.

Big low: Our car was parked on the street last night and was nearly demolished by a hit-and-run driver. They were going so fast they took out the car behind us too. So now we don't have a car. Luckily I can walk to work but now have to take the bus to school, and one-hour trip each way. The police were sure they were drunk because we were sideswiped from the opposite direction, meaning the car drifted from the other side of the street and smacked into ours at about 30 miles an hour on a 20mph one-way street they think. Why us? Of all the cars on the street to hit...I live in a very affluent neighborhood, in an apartment surrounded by incredible houses, and we are probably the last person within miles that could afford to buy another car. I love my car so much. It was so forgiving when I was learning to drive in December after finally getting up the courage at age 25. Now she's gone. I feel so guilty because she wasn't parked in her regular spot...we left her on the street while we went upstairs to make a shopping list for the store. When my hubby heard the metal-crunching collision I knew it was the Beast and I burst into tears. Our poor baby. It sounds silly to say that, but it is the first car we own together and we are very very fond of it. We haven't even had her for a whole year yet. We paid cash from a friend and it has been running perfectly. Until now. And our insurance is the minumum required for CA meaning it won't pay for our damage, just damage we inflict upon others. :crying2: :crying2:

While I'm at it, I hate drinking and drunks and anyone who dares put someone's life and/or property in their own hands. I'm sure I could never work in the ER because I would see the chaos that comes from idiots who can't handle themselves and end up hurting others. I would just want to strangle the culprit first and then fix the pt. :angryfire

Thanks for letting me vent.

Hi ArmyNurse,

First off - Congrats on your Good News - way to go!!!

About your car - we had the same thing happen a few years ago. My husband had a Toyota pick-up that he kept in great shape and hoped to drive it for years. After it was paid off our Insurance guy suggested we drop the collision insurance because of it's age - so we did. He had the truck parked in front of our house one day (almost on the side-walk) - a girl came barreling down the street in a truck, smashed into the back of it and pushed it quite a long way - the front end - ended up in a phone pole - it was demolished.

We heard the crash and ran outside - found her crying inside her truck and (unbelievably) her screaming baby in a car seat on the floor - she hadn't strapped the seat in and the child and seat had crashed into the dash. We called 911 - they took care of the Mom and Baby. The police found a bottle of whiskey under her seat - but said it wasn't opened. I'm not sure if they ever did a blood-alcohol test on her - she was so upset, screaming, crying, etc. - it might have been over looked.

Anyways, her insurance company decided our truck was a total loss and offered us the whopping sum of $3,000 - that was the blue-book value of the truck, but didn't take into consideration the fact that it was in excellent condition at the time of the crash and had many years left to it. Seriously, I don't think you could buy a dirt-bike for $3,000 bucks.. The girl went to court - speed limit on our street is 25 mph, she had to be going at least 60 to do the damage she did - she got off with a slap on the wrist (don't do that again ok?). Honestly - I wanted to kick her "orifice" for not only what she did to our truck, but for putting her own baby in so much danger!!! We couldn't afford a new truck so my husband took the $3,000 and had his cracked up truck rebuilt - but it never drove the same again - had all sorts of problems. She of course got a new car out of the deal and went merrily on her way. My Mom always said we all get what's coming to us in the end - hate to say it - but can only hope some people get a big boot in the behind when their time comes!!!!

Same thing happened to my friend awhile back. His car had just been paid off and he found it demolished on the curb one morning. Luckily a police report was stuck to the window with the other driver's insurance info an all, but you know they only gave him the blue book value of the car. Maybe $1000 seems like a lot to the insurance company, but when your car is worth more than that TO YOU it sucks. He couldn't buy anything as good as his old car still was with that $1000 and is it fair that he should have to take out another loan for a new car? Life just sucks sometimes!!!

Wow! What an emotional day!

First of all, Congratulations on your acceptance! That truly is wonderful news!

But......how awful about your car. Thank God no one was hurt, but it still stinks. If your car was damaged that badly, one can only hope that the DD car was damaged just as much and can be found (or maybe that's only in CSI that that happens!). What a jerk - no regard for anyone but themselves. I, too, have no sympathy for DD's. Everyone who has a heartbeat knows of the dangers of it, and it is 100% avoidable.

Sorry about the car! That sucks! But, Congrats on school! I hope to be starting at that time, so you wont be alone! And really, its NOT that far away (its pretty scary for me actually!)

Best of luck!

I know what you mean being attached to your car.

I love my '92 Ford Taurus with all my heart and will be very sad day she has her demise. She is only worth a few thousand, if that, but to me she is worth much much more because I keep her in great running shape and she is much more reliable than even a number of brand new cars.

The only thing I can hope for you is that they are able to find the person that did this so you can sue his butt! Hopefully there is some way to proove that this person was drinking and driving when the accident occurred. A number of states will now allow you to file a civil suit against drunk drivers in an attempt to get more money from them.

Good luck and I hope they catch this person.

off topic... but check out http://www.taurusclub.com its the website to my car club. i have a 97 Taurus. It was the car of the month for Sept 2004. Its on the front page. just thought you'd like to know, because there is so much info on these cars if you ever need to fix it yourself, to save tons of cash.

congrats on making nursing school!! i'm hopefully gonna start in aug 2005 also. Still have to be accepted though. And sorry to hear about your car. Drunk drivers suck. This past december my dad was building a garage on a 25mph road. he went out to get nails in the trailor and when he got out of the tralior and turned around he was hit by a car going 75mph. he was pinned between the trailor and the car and than thrown to the side. The guy was 47 years old and drunk beyond belief and on crack. at 11am in the morning. That call was the worst call of my life. The cops knew the guy as soon as they got there. Hes in jail still. My dad was in the hospital for 2 months and he had to get his leg amputated. It was horrible. I was at the hospital every single day for 2 months, 8 hours or more a day. Thats how i decided to go to nursing school. Now i just hope i can make it.

Dear Sarah, I'm so sorry for your dad. I have cheered up about the car after everybody kept reminding me to be grateful that no one was hurt. After reading your story I feel kind of like I have no right to whine like I did. My husband could have been hurt or killed. He was about 30 seconds away from moving the car into its regular spot. That's how he heard the accident. He was halfway out the door, keys in hand. It terrifies me to think what would have happened if the car had arrived at our car at the same time he did...

Once again, sorry for your dad. And best of luck getting into nursing school!
