Would YOU give me another chance?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hi everyone. I haven't posted much, but I read posts everyday and have seen the incredible amount of support this board can provide. I am in the process of a financial aid appeal at my local college. I would like some honest opinons on my letter and possible some suggestions of how I could make it better. The letter is kind of long, so I would understand if noboby want to read it :)

Thanks in advance

Anjie

Dear Appeal Committee,

I am writing this letter to appeal my financial aid suspension. I would like to begin thanking all of you in advance for taking the time to read this letter and consider my request to receive financial aid at .... First, I will explain my educational goals. I plan to apply to and hopefully enter the nursing program in fall of 2005. Meanwhile, I will complete all of the general education classes required for a degree in nursing. This timeline will enable me to take the time to focus on a relatively small number of classes each semester and achieve an excellent grade in each class. Although I must admit that becoming a nurse has not always been a dream of mine, I now realize that nursing is my "calling" and I am determined to do whatever is necessary to achieve this goal.

The first time I enrolled in a class at ... was fall semester of 1999. Shortly after the class began, my employer offered me a promotion and substantial raise. I decided to accept the position as a supervisor, as it was a great opportunity. Shortly after beginning my new position, I became overwhelmed by all of the extra hours at work, the responsibility of being a single parent, and my college class. At that time I made the decision to withdraw from the class. Unfortunately, I had no idea the impact that this decision would have on my future at ....

Two years later, I was laid off and searching for a new job. I began two classes at ... and shortly after, found a good paying job. Although this job paid well, it was very stressful and they soon required mandatory overtime from all of their employees. I decided to withdraw from one of my classes and try to juggle the rest of my responsibilities. I eventually stopped attending the second class causing me to receive a failing grade in that class. I regret that decision and now wonder if I could have managed to be successful in school had I used better time management skills.

Since I was not receiving Financial Aid either of the times I enrolled at ..., I was unaware that these choices would cause me to lose the opportunity for financial assistance in the future. My situation has changed greatly since I attended classes at .... I am now married and my husband supports my goal to become a RN. He will provide for our family financially and support me in any other way necessary to achieve my goal. Although I have made mistakes regarding my education in the past, I am now willing and able to focus on my schooling. College is now a priority in my life and an essential part of my future.

Thank you again for considering my appeal.

Oh boy...I am in big trouble now. Poor grammar and sentence structure? Oh well, maybe I'll get better after taking English 1010 :) I can change a lot of the other things, but I am at a loss for this stuff. See, college will be good for me. My fingers are crossed.

Anjie Good luck to you in obtaining your goals. You have received excellent advice. I wish you nothing but the best, and hope your revision of this letter helps. But if it doesn't...go forward anyway.

good letter

but, take out all the "at...."

use periods or commas, not ..., and at.... doesn't make any sense.

lol, anyway, good luck!

You're letter is great...I think that you will not have any problems. Reading your posting was like looking into a mirror. I started an ADN program back in 1996 but because of hubby, kids and a good paying job, I gave up school. Now, I'm back and I'm determined to finish. I'm going back into my second semester after a three year absence. Am I nervous..yes - but also very determined. I can tell you from experience that the times that lie ahead for you will not be easy. You will be frustrated and tempted to through it away -- but don't. The main thing that you must remember is your goal!!!! Another piece of advice..time managment will be very important. Prioritize!!! I hope hubby will help you cook and clean (mine does) you are going to need a lot of support and not only from hubby but from family and close friends. Don't be ashamed to ask for help when you need it and don't feel guility about taking time away from hubby and kids...once you're out working you'll have plenty of time.

Good Luck.

All of you are great and I really do appreciate all of the advice! This is such a helpful message board. I would like to explain all of the "at..." stuff though. In the actual letter the .... was the name of the school I hope to attend. I just felt better not putting that in my post so I replaced the schools name with ....

No big deal, just thought I'd clarify that.

Been there (financial aid suspension, I had to withdrawl from classes for medical reasons) and Done that (appeal letter)! I wish you the best!!! If this is the first time you have been placed on suspension, you should be fine! Good Luck!!!

Best wishes...good advice all around and have nothing more to offer but my support. Hang in there!! :)

Hi,

I would give you another chance. I am going through the same type of problem with recieving Financial Aid at the college I am wanting to attend. I like the fact that you posted your letter to here to to get some feedback before you sent it in to the Financial Aide Office. I wish I had thought about doing that. I"ll be saying a little prayer for you.

Hi Anjie, just wanted to say good luck and your letter looked good to me! I agree with the other posters, just "tweak" it a little bit and it will be good to go. Good luck to ya and keep us posted!

Good luck. You have received some good feedback and support, we are all pulling for you!!!! Remember that most of this will be a financial decision on their part, not necessarily you as a person. I am sure they have a certain amount of money to work with and when it is gone, well, it is just gone. Just hang in there and continue to press forward with achieving your goal no matter what the outcome is at this point.

Please let us know how it goes, we are all interested!!!
