Worried about a new job

I just relocated to start a new job. Towards the end of hospital orientation I see my manager to discuss the scheduling of my unit orientation, where she very apologetically explains that they don't need me for full-time days (which is what I was hired for) but has a DESPERATE need for nights!!

I explain that although I understand her problem, I really find nights difficult (did them for years but many years ago). I offered a temporary compromise in that I would orient to an additional unit in order to increase the odds of going to days but would work only two nights a shift, running consecutively. She agreed but I don't trust her.

Now my orientation on the 2 units is nearing the end, and the new schedule starts next week, yet she has been avoiding me despite my requests to get together to put me on the schedule.

Now I am REALLY worried that I have made a mistake relocating. Any advice?

I would just chase her down till she talks with you. I mean literally chase her down.

This is one of the crappiest things I have ever heard of.. Hope you can work it out.

Unless your job prospects are better elsewhere, I would keep this job and acclimate myself to nights as best as I possibly could. You do not want to be one of the many nurses across the U.S. who is unemployed because you refuse to work the night shift. Nursing jobs are growing increasingly harder to find, even for those with plenty of experience.

Let's face it. Day shift is coveted and highly desired, so it makes sense that you might have to put in your time on nights before you have a decent shot to bid on a day spot. Good luck to you!

Um, yes, but I was HIRED for day shift. If she didn't want me to work days, she should have said, I am hiring you for nights, then I could accept or decline BEFORE I relocate.

Thanks for the support! And yes, I will chase her down.....not that I'm optimistic. Evidently she did this to two other nurses (that I know of) who "gave in". I'm trying to compromise but the whole thing sucks. Guess I will be job hunting again.

I had the exact same reaction that nlmoore had upon reading your post. "OH CRAP." Because they screwed you, basically. Relocating to take a job is huge. Her "realizing" she really needs you for nights AFTER hiring you for days and AFTER you relocating is completely bogus. BUT... she sort of "has" you. I don't see a clear or easy answer to this situation. I would definitely move mountains to MAKE her address you though...

I'm so freaking p****d off though! I have the moral high ground but big deal. All that will provide is a dry spot to put my refrigerator box that I will live in when I'm outta work. And trust me, I don't do well on nights so it's quit or be asked to leave I guess.

Oh, and did I mention the sign on bonus they promised but then said that "corporate" is not allowing them. "now"

I totally understand. Not only do I not do well on nights, I do freaking HORRIBLY on nights. I cant.do.nights.period. So I feel ya, and I hate it for you. It just seems so wrong. I think it's time you pull out your big guns and lay it out to her. "I simply can not do nights. I was hired for days. I relocated to take a job with day shift. I need day shift. I have oriented and I am ready to do this." Who knows - maybe when someone with a backbone confronts her she will back down?

Well, I told her I would work 2 nights a week, consecutive nights only, and I will try it out. Unlike my manager, I keep my word. I am just worried that She'll start adding nights, or splitting them up.

The last time I worked nights I fell asleep at the wheel Christmas morning and totaled my car.

Well, I think it's cool to give it a go with the terms you've specified. If things start changing, you MUST put your foot down. I certainly wish you the best, and hope you will update us in a few weeks and let us know how it's going.

This sounds very familiar. I don't know if you are from or in Florida by your name, but if you are here now, "Welcome to Florida". This is how business is run here. Tell you one thing to get your foot in the door, then pull the rug out. If you are not in or from Florida, they are learning it FROM FLORIDA.;)

It's very possible that this is out of your Manager's hands and she's caught in the middle. My guess is that someone with senority either withdrew their resignation or switched from part time to full time or transferred from another unit. The manager may be the face in front of this but in reality it's an HR issue.
