Why is a Condem catheter also called a Texas cath? We were talking about it in class and the instructors could not agree on a reason.

Texas was a brand name, like earlier posters have mentioned.
Why do we say Foley caths for indwelling caths? Brand name, again. Other firms make them, but we use the Foley interchangably w/indwelling.

I'm from CA. I first heard the term Texas cath (not hat) about 40 years ago before I ever heard them called condom caths. And nobody could tell me why, because I remember asking.

I'm originally from the midwest and we called them texas hat's and texas cath's. The hat was becasue it looked like a cowboy hat and the cath was the manufacturer.........that and we didn't use the word "condom" in mixed company.....:) HOw old fashioned is that????

In South Africa, we used to refer to them as "Pauls Tubing", but what Paul had to do with it, unless he provided the model, I have no idea
Nowadays, they're just referred to as "Male Sheaths", available in small, medium, large and extra large.

I always thought it was because they were bigger in size to slip on external over the member, since everything is bigger in texas, hence is where I thought the name came from
This is the second time today someone beat me to the punchline, there's a bunch of energizer bunnies out there today.

We call them "convene" or "External catheter" here. Interesting.

I am in Texas and have referred to them as such. In fact, our competency checklist denotes that name.

So the Texan "cowboys" could get drunk, dodge bullets and ride their horsies into the sunset all without having to hit the lavatory.
