What's Your Best Nursing Ghost Story?

Nurses General Nursing Nursing Q/A

Nursing is a profession that often involves long lonely night shifts in eerie hospital wards. It's a perfect breeding ground for ghost stories. These stories often involve sightings of apparitions, strange noises, and unexplained events that are said to have taken place in hospitals, hospices, and other healthcare settings. Some of these stories are believed to be based on true events, while others are purely fictional. Regardless, they continue to captivate and intrigue both nurses and non-nurses alike - providing a spooky glimpse into the world of healthcare after dark.

I know you have seen and heard freaky things. Share your nursing ghost stories...

Halloween's a comin'...

So the other day this security man at my facility had a ghost story to share...

He said they usually make rounds on all floors of the hospital every night just to make sure that locked places remain locked and that no suspicious activities are going on. On this unit that once was a stroke unit but was now locked up, whenever they made rounds they could hear a shuffling feet right behind them. This shuffle was always after them, no matter what security man made those rounds, and sometimes even open doors they had shut thereby doubling their work. He said though they couldn't see this 'entity' they could feel and hear him. Finally, they learned to ask him to stop and let them do their work. Then and only then would he stop but if they didn't ask him to stop, he would mischievously follow them around and turn lights on, open doors and all sorts of things to get and keep their attention.

I just wanted to say that I think it's interesting that this thread-- which is easily the one of the most entertaining on this site AND is one that has been active for THIRTEEN YEARS-- was started by a member who has but that one post to their name...

It's been thirteen years, steffck... do you know your thread is still alive today?

Edit: hmmm... funny. The thread was started in 2000... but the first response was not given until 2005.

No wonder the OP never came back

Is that like the help that never shows up?

lol. made my day!!!

I'm not a nurse so please forgive some of my "non-nursing" terms. My mother is an LPN who retired after 35 years of nursing. The experiences that she had amaze me. This is not a ghost story but I found it touching. A patient was admitted that the staff felt should be a DNR. Unfortunately the family felt otherwise. After several weeks the gentleman coded. Staff members worked on him for quite some time and were eventually able to revive him. The first thing that the patient did was open up his eyes, look at my mother, and say "Mary, I was so happy there. Why did you have to bring me back?". He was transferred to ICU & later passed away so she was never able to ask him what he had seen and why he was so upset to return.

My aunt told me her experience when she was a student nurse. That time she was assigned in the 5th floor of the hospital. While she was writing her notes and she was facing by the window, a male nurse passed by the window and said hi to her. And because she was occupied my aunt answered back "hello good evening" and later she realized how come a person could walk pass infront a 5th floor window, unless he floats or he's not a human.

This is not a nursing related experience but it's true and I consider this as unforgettable. When I was in high school, I was fond of making handmade gifts for christmas. A night before the 24th of December, around 11. I was still awake and in a rush of making my christmas gifts. Later on, I heard a strange sound at the rooftop. That time my mom was still awake and I asked what's that scary noise. It's like a flying noise and something wants to come in. My mother answered probably just the cat chasing the mouse. So with her statement I just continued my work and didn't bother with the eerie noise at the rooftop. Since Philippines is a very hot place even at night I normally open the window when I sleep. After I finished my cards and gifts probably about 2am

I faced infront my mirror which I can see the reflection of my huge window that a person can actually fit in. While I was combing my hair suddenly I saw a monstrous being trying to enter my room but he could not fit in because of his ridiculously huge wings. That moment I felt like I was an actor in the movie in which I experienced that I froze and I hardly move my fingers, I was stuck. I wanted to scream for help but no words would come out. I wanted to run but I couldn't move my legs. I was so desperate in escaping that scene and that monster was also desperate in entering my room. Since I couldn't move or scream I just closed my eyes and pray sincerely to God. I was crying and very frightened. Later on that monstrous being hurriedly left and I think he sensed that my dad would come. After few mins my dad came and he saw me standing in front my mirror in shock and later I collapsed. When I woke up I told them what happened and guess what, they never believe me. They even accused me of being rebellious. Anyway, that was my first and last encounter with that kind of creature. But until now I can still recall the feeling of being extremely horrified.

Another story is what youngest sister experienced. My sister aged 10 years old that time and she loved to stay and play in our maid's quarter because she grew up with the nanny. One day, while she was playing she saw a white lady passing by the window and my sister was in shock for days. She coudn't talk and just stared blankly. We even had to admit her in the hospital but the doctors couldn't explain what's happening with her. They just said that my sister might witness a traumatic experience. When she was back to normal, I asked her if its true what she saw and she seriously admitted that she saw a white lady passed by. After that she never stay again in our maid's quarter but because of that incident she could see strange beings that she could hardly explain. It's like that incident opened her third eye ability.

*I just notice that the 3 stories I shared there's one common denominator, the involvement of the windows.

There is an old "poorhouse" a couple hours away from me that is "haunted". In the late 1800's and early 1900's poor people, widows, children, criminals, and those labeled "insane" all were housed together. Over 1700 people were known to have died there. It closed for good in the early 70's. The owners today opened it up to paranormal investigators and lay people with an interest in the paranormal to conduct "ghost hunts" there. It is known as one of the most haunted places in the East. The investigators from TV's "Ghost Hunters" have been there. I have gone with one of my daughters 4 times now. It is weird spending the night in a haunted asylum, let me tell you. There is a room decorated for CHristmas and it said children haunt it. We were there one night and asked the "ghosts" which ornament hanging on the tree was their favorite and I kid you not specific ornaments would shake and jiggle and make noise. No one else was there and nothing could be moving them! My daughter also posed for pictures and asked the ghosts to get in the picture with her. Well we took alot of pics with nothing unusual about them . But then I took one and right by the tree was a shadowy figure that you could tell was a young a girl...BUT NO ONE was there when I took the picture! Also we got voices on tape that we did not hear when we were there. One said "please help me ". There is a room where it is rumored the ghost doesnt like women. We were in there trying to talk to this ghost. We asked "Is that you George?' We heard no answer.. later when playiing it back there was a male voice that said, "yes, yes it's me.. get out" CREEPY

Sound like Rolling Hills Asylum. That's in NY. It was an asylum and then a nursing home. My friend has pictures of shadowy figures and voices on tape. The batteries drained out of her camera and flashlight. Super creepy place. I want to go for a tour.
