What is your Holiday pay like??

New nurse here. I get the rotation of holidays and all that.....I want to know if my facility is rare by NOT paying you for the holiday you had off. I have Labor Day off, but was just asked today if I want paid "from my personal time off" for the year. Normal, or not?

We are closed on all major holidays but in the rare event that we would have to work, we get double pay. We get major holidays off paid. I think it's 6 paid holidays...

How my last facility handled holidays and PTO was like this: I was guaranteed X number of paid holidays a year (I can't remember the exact number, but it was pretty much all the main holidays). I could take the holiday on the day of the holiday or anytime within that calendar month. Whenever I took the paid holiday for my day off, I'd get paid the base hourly rate with no differential.

Or I could work on the holiday itself, for which I'd get time-and-a-half plus any differential.

So for, say, Labor Day, I could do one of the following to meet my hours (I had to work 4 shifts a week):

a. Take Labor Day as a paid holiday, work 3 other days that week.

b. Don't take Labor Day as a paid holiday, work 4 other days that week. Then I could opt to take the paid holiday as a day off later on in the month (note: I had to take the paid holiday in September or else I lost it--I couldn't roll it over to October, or take it early in August)

c. Work Labor Day and get time-and-a-half salary, then work 3 more days that week. Then I'd still have the paid holiday as a day to take off later in the month.

I get time and a half if I work the holiday. If I don't work the holiday, I don't get any pay, and just work three shifts as normal that week.

I get time and a half if I work on the holiday. Holiday, sick and vacation time are all clumped together in our PTO account. Generally, if I am off the holiday, I would just work three other shifts that week. The first year of employment colleagues have about 170 hours of PTO, which isn't too shabby in my opinion.

If I dont work I get paid as if I worked a normal shift, so its a paid day off. If I do work its double time. Im a LPN at an assisted living facility.

I work just weekends, I get paid a lot more to work weekends; However, I also bank far less PTO time. So, if a holiday falls on my weekend I receive double pay and do not have to use my PTO time ever. If I have a holiday off because it doesn't fall on the weekend and I decide to work it, I still get double time and do not have to use my PTO time. It can stink working all weekends but there are some decent incentives.

I was surprised by this, too, when I started in healthcare. Must be an industry thing sort of. I used to work in news, and we got paid for the holidays we were lucky enough to not work without it coming out of our PTO ... but our PTO bank didn't accrue quite as fast, so that is where things sort of even out. It does seem strange this way a bit, and it is on you to manage your PTO bank appropriately to have enough time I guess. At my hospital, we get a higher differential for holidays ... I think it is about $11/hr. Doesn't equal time and a half for most people.
