hello,i am new here and i need some advice.

i am about to start lpn school in september and iwanted to know if i can do it....... a little background......

i recently had a baby, the baby was born 11 weeks premature so i got to spend sometime in the nicu and see first hand the wonderful jobs that nurses do day in day out. i was told by the doctor that i can not take the baby to a babysitter until she is 6months corrected age that made me quit my job that i was making 50k a year tostay home with the baby. The lpn class start 5pm to 9 pm for 13 months. My husband and idecided that i should go to school in the evening and work as a cna from 11 to 7 in the morning while he stay with the baby during this time and when i get home then he goes to work and comes back at 4pm. school is m-f and work is going to be like 36 hours a week. do u guys think this is doable or i am setting myself up to fail. please advice

We have one student in our LVN school that has a baby and works but she is very exceptional. She is very together and never leaves extra time wasted. While we are chatting it up on our break during clinical time she sits quietly and does her careplan. She never lets a minute pass without doing some kind of school work. I know I can work on my careplan at home. She wants to be with her family when at home.

Other full-time students and full-time workers at my school do not have babies but they get by and say it is difficult. Students that have had too much going on drop out and come back and pick it up the next year when things are better. They will complete first semester and some second semester and then come back. We had two students join my class for second semester and another two will join us for third semester. Several left after fist semester and we expect them back next year.

You can always try. Why not?

But I have a question for you. If you have a 4 year degree already did you consider going straight for a BSN or even a Master's? They have accelerated programs for students that already have a degree. Just wondering. Good luck whatever you decide. :)

Well, you are used to hard work, so it may just work out. I just worry about that sweet baby getting what she needs. Just my $0.02.

thank you guys for the reply. I have a wonderful husband that really helps me out with the baby, i get like 7 hours of uninterrupted sleep everyday which is awesome. i have an international B.sc in finance so it does not really help that much in transffering credits. I believe i can do it i just needed some encouragement.;)

You're getting 7 hours of uninterrupted sleep now because hubby is there to get up for a feeding or two during the night. But when you start school and work, you'll be off at 7 a.m., hopefully asleep by 9 a.m., up at 4 p.m. (if you're going to get 7 hours), and at school by 5 p.m. And hopefully the baby sleeps that whole 7 hours.

Thanks a lot for that.

Just a quick update.... I read everybodys post and i decided to adhere to it. I will put off lpn school until march 08, thank you to all who responded it is greatly appreciated. I learn a lot from this site, it is just unbelieavable that a website like this exist... thanks to the founder, the moderators and all the wonderful resgistered users may God bless u all.

Hi, just happened to be at the computer working on a paper for a management course I'm doing over the summer.

Glad you've made your decision and happy the input here was helpful. I think you're going to be much happier waiting until the baby is a little older.

BTW, is there any particular reason you're going the LPN route rather than a 2-year RN? Please nobody out there think I'm in any way, shape or form knocking LPNs. My hat is off to them!

That makes perfectly good sense! Best of luck!

sshannon, what u said got me thinking about the rn program so i went online and found out that i can take most of my pre reqs on line so what i am planning on doing is go down to the community college and apply so i can start taking classes on line and still spend some time with my baby. What do u think?

I think that's a great idea! I did my prereqs part time, and some of the courses were online.

Right now I am doing an online RN program through my local community college. It's been wonderful in terms of giving me added flexibility. Clinical days at the hospital, testing dates and an occasional seminar are the only dates that are set in stone. Otherwise I can get the work done (studying, papers, etc.) as I find time. It has allowed me to balance family and a 12-hour a week job.

One of the the things I found key to doing well is forming or getting in with a study group. People who've tried to do it all on their own end up not doing as well. It's just helpful to have others to bounce things off of, and study for exams with.

Again, very best of luck!
