Unemployed Old Grads?

Nurses General Nursing

Over the last few months I have seen alot of threads by New Grads who have yet to be hired. The latest is one stating she graduated 2 years ago and still can't find work. So, my question is... Won't going so long without working prevent you from finding a position? Being so far past graduation and never using thier skills? I really am worried that we are losing some Nurses who could turn out to be great if given the chance.

Aren't nursing homes hiring? When I was in nursing school back in 1990 and 1991, everyone was hiring. When I graduated, no one was except nursing homes. I was hired on the spot in the one LTC facility I went to (this was way before the internet)

Everything is very tight now. I'd say, try everything, including a refresher. While I'm in school it's been hard for me to apply for work concurrently, but I'm trying to anyway. Personally, I don't want to work in a nursing home, but if that's my only option, I'll take it! I think things are improving a little bit though.

@RNbyDesign... Homecare is really my dream job. However, I have only done it as a CNA. I Know that Homecare agencies only hire nurses with experience, which I can understand because you will have alot of responsibility assessing clients in the home. My plan was to work as a staff nurse in a hospital to gain experience at assessing, equipment, meds.... ect. Is it possible to go right into home care with additional classes? How can I take classes if I am not employed at a hospital yet. I would love to gain more experience in Wound care.

Thanks for the info

Bea

I know a new grad who was two years unemployed and recently got hired into a competitive critical care internship. So, it's not impossible.

It seems to be picking up right now. I got an ED residency and in the past week have been offered 9 interviews....? Where were all these people in the 4 months it took me to get a job after graduation!?

beatrice1, have you tried applying to other home health agency's or talked to the one you work for now about employing you as an RN instead of a CNA? I got hired into home health as a new grad, took me 6 months to fin a job, but i'm thankful i even have one as a nurse. I still can't get seem to get hired or even interviewed for a hospital. But anyways, I know a lot of agencys say you need experience, but I know some are willing to hire new grads, especially if you already work in homehealth. Good luck

Right now I work as a private Aid for a family. I did work at a home visiting agency in the past but to be honest, I do not want to work at that one as a nurse, I saw alot of "unprofessional practices" going on there. And many of the CNA's they have working for them are very unprofessional. The turn over rate for RN's and CNA's there is outragous. But I would consider working for another one.... thank you all for the encouragment :redbeathe

I do have another question... Are the "internships or residency" programs in hospitals actually hired positions? How can I find out or apply to these in my area?

Thanks again

May I ask how you found out about and applied for that internship. I would like to know how I could find out about them in my area.

Thanks

hey Bea,

I called around to different HR departments after I looked online at the websites for different hospitals. A lot of hospitals have information about residencies etc right on the website, then you can call the HR dept to see if there is anything available, what qualifies you to apply, when the next one will be posted and how to apply. You will probably have to leave a message as they are busy people, I would shoot them an email as well just to cover your bases.

Good luck!

Thank you for your response! I will definitly look into it further at my local hospitals.

I graduated in May and have still not found a job! I passed my NCLEX in June and have been applying like mad to get my foot in the door somewhere. I live in an area that has many hospitals and I have only been given one interview (because my husband works for that institution). I was a dental assistant before I decided to go into nursing and I am thinking that my lack of hospital experience is hindering me. I don't know what else it could be. I have become so desperate I have applied for LPN positions and today I applied for a student nurse intern position. At least it will get me some experience! I am frustrated and annoyed that I spent 4 years working on this achievement only for it to stall out like this.
