U of M or Genesys?

My vote is ICU!

Wow! Congrats on 2 offers in MI as a new grad! I am currently completing my pre-req's for an ABSN program in MI. I don't mean to impose on your thread, but could you please tell me where you graduated from? And how did you manage to land such great opportunities in our economy? (ie., grades, extern experience, ect).

My vote would be for Genesys!

I would not base my decision on the criteria you have stated. I would look for the position that offers the greatest future potential. Which position will help you to grow as a nurse?

I was a nursing assistant on a cardiology step-down unit while in nursing school. I don't think is was so much for grades as it was previous experiences on the cardiac unit and a good interview (goals, etc). I really didn't start applying for a job until well after passing the NCLEX (there were a few other things going on at the same time). I've actually been out of school for over 6months now. I still maintained my position and it seemed that within a week I had many places call me back for interviews, etc. These 2 areas appealed to me. I am not as familiar with Genesys as with U of M, so that is where I hesitate. I would love to end up working in the ICU eventually, but sometimes wonder if experience on a step-down unit in busier hospital might be beneficial before beginning on an ICU in general. I am a MSU graduate.

Thank you for the response! The criteria was a just a little info for the posters...not so much why I would choose a position. I am debating what you asked...I'm not sure which would offer more growth for me personally as a nurse. ICU sounds like an excellent place to learn quick decision making, plus I can move in any direction within the hospital with the skills I learn (ie OR, other ICUs, etc). Whereas working at U of M also has its perks, even if on a cardiac unit (the hospital is well known for its cardiac), and I will see newer technologies as well as have the ability to participate in research.

It sounds like Genesys is an FT position. So strictly in terms of experience, you will get more with them unless you end up working extra shifts at U/M on a regular basis.

However, there is something to consider in that you ARE a new grad and I think that, in general, new grads need some experience before going to ICU. Some can handle the stress and feeling overwhelmed as a new nurse initially, but many cannot until they have experience elsewhere first.

First of all, I want to THANK all you for for the responses, as it is nice to hear from other nurses/future nurses on the input. I did make a decision, actually yesterday, and although it was tearing me apart, as I was leaning more with Genesys (perfect shift, great people, great position, etc). I cried after I made the decision, it was that TOUGH! :crying2: I have have thought much about how much of stress the 1st year of being a new nurse is (from what others have told me), and I am afraid of making mistakes (we all like to be perfectionists). Moving out towards Flint would be another big move for me, away from my family, and I don't think I am ready for that yet (they are my #1 support). On top of that, I will be getting married next year (another life stress) and my fiance has expressed thoughts about accepting another job some place that might be further away from Flint, so before I make a permanent decision to move someplace, I think it is best to work closer to home for a little bit (& U of M would not be a bad place to start). I am definitely looking forward to work at Genesys in the future, but for now and my circumstances, it is best to stay local and close to family support, get that one year of experience in nursing and then see how my feelings have changed.

Congrats on the new job! I have an interview on Tuesday with U of M and it is my first new grad interview!!! I was hoping to private message you, but I don't have enough posts yet. Did you get a lot of "tell me about a time when you....." etc questions at U of M? I REALLY want this job. It is a miracle to have gotten an interview.

I started applying in October, haven't looked outside of the hospital but I'd say I've put in about 80 applications at various hospitals.
