Just wondering for those that have done school nursing and decided it wasn't for them and found another job if you're happy with your decision? Everyone keeps telling me I'm crazy and that I'll regret it if I leave school nursing esp since it's been many years since I've been in the hospital that I'm forgetting how stressful it is. I just feel more ready for a challenge and I've never been thrilled working every day during the week. Just wondered if anyone regretted it. Thanks!

Maybe you could do some prn work at a hospital just to see if its something you would like to do? I have done that a few times in my past when I just wanted to sample what else was out there.

You should post this in the school nursing section for the forum. I worked as a school health assistant for a few years and I left that position due to becoming a nurse and wanting more hands on experience. I'm now looking back to going to school nursing. I love working with children and educating the kids, teachers, parents and other staff. I love not having to work weekends, holidays, or snow days. School nursing has its pros and cons. I wouldn't recommend it for a new grad but at the same time if its someones passion then they should go for it.

BTW- just got hired to be a PRN school nurse. Can't wait.

I suggest you get a per-diem job at a hospital. Then you can decide if it's something you want to do or not.

Until the economy crashed no regrets, I loved what I was doing, but now in the state I live in I can't get my license back without some really big bucks, so make sure you KNOW what your BON requires to maintain your license. I do maintain one in Ohio through online CE's, but in GA if you don't work as a nurse forget it.

Take it from me -- consider yourself extremely lucky! Keep that school nurse job FOREVER--stay away from the hospitals-- only check them out on a per diem basis, and you will quickly see how lucky you are. You could also do outpatient, endoscopy, office nursing, flu shots, hospice, or home health all on a per diem basis through agencies if you want to keep up some of your skills, but whatever you do-- DO NOT go to the med-surg, tele floors--it is a nightmare and will drive you insane. I have been doing this for fifteen years and it is absolutely horrible and i can't think of anything i detest more. And when i became ill, nearly died, and was hospitalized for 8 days twice, my job was gone--management did not stick by me and gave me the ax while i was in the hospital. Stay in school nursing and never leave your job until you have a firm offer on another one--meaning background check is back and drug screen completed. My MD ordered anti-anxiety meds which i can't take because as i look for another job i don't want these meds on the drug screen--may prevent me from receiving the job offer.
