I am terrified here. I completed my LPN program in March of 99. After an unexpected family member passed and about 3 moves later I have not taken my licensure exam. I have always worked in the medical field, psych many years, cardiac many years and hospice care. I began my education in an RN pre-requisites program that had a waiting list a few years long. I am terrified I forgot everything I learned even though I've tried to review with bullets books and nclex sample questions. Does anyone have ANY sort of advice or suggestions for my situation. I have saved all my school notes etc. Also, I've read about reviews on these boards and was wondering how I find one in my area? I would love to be a part of yahoo discusion groups if at all possible (read something about that on these boards also). I just some direction on how to go about joining.

Any and all help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Be prepared to go back for the entire program.

I thought that the licensure exam had to be taken w/in a certain amount of time from graduating from the program. You might want to check w/ your BON. 5 yrs is a loooonnnggg time. Good luck!

I always refer everyone preparing to take NCLEX to go to the site I provide and read the letter there explaining the Computer adaptive testing process. If you are still eligible to test just review your NCLEX book and answer around 400 questions from as many sources as you can find (I will drop a good link for that too)and then just go for it. I know it is scary but you just have to do it and when it is done you will be fine!

Thanks to those that responded. Some mention going back to school, is that necessary or you are not sure?

I think it is a question as to whether you can still take State Boards due to your length of time after completion of the course. You should call you Board of Nursing and be sure but I think I have heard that most states will still let you test.

Just some insight ...

All the classes I had taken through college were "expired" and I was informed to go on and get my RN I would have to take all of them over after only five years of nursing as an LPN... I am still working towards the RN however I do have to take all the courses over . Very frusterating, but I think it is wise; We forget alot from school over time and our field is ever changing and every day technology advances putting older information out of date.

I think you should contact the board of nursing in your area to find out for sure on the testing issue; I believe the states I am licensed in have a specific amount of time you are allowed to take the test from the time you graduate nursing school.

Thanks again to those that took the time to respond. I appreciate your willingness to help. I just spoke to my board of nursing. The woman I spoke with informed me that I can take my exam at any time. I, myself am a bit surprised by the news but pleased. Any other Floridians (Orlando area) preparing for the LPN license exam and need a study partner?!

I feel much better now after discovering this board and phoning the board. Thanks again.

Look at it this way. If you don't pass that's the worse that could happen, and you haven't worked as an LPN for five years, so you're no worse off than you've been for five years. So just relax and have some confidence. You had what it took to get through LPN school, you have what it takes to pass the boards too! You just have to wake up a few brain cells. :)

I had a friend that failed the LPN NCLEX exam a number of times. She than sat in on a whole med-surg class.

She only got a satisfactory or unsatisfactory for the course. Needless to say, she passed the NCLEX after this.

This will boost your confidence, and I am sure you will learn a lot.

Bambi, was this at the local college or something? I would LOVE to sit through med-surg rotation again before attempting the exam. Also, anyone know of actual review sites (meaning classroom instruction) for practical nurses? I am in the Orlando area and have been calling around most of the day today trying to find something to aid me in the preparation. Any suggestions and /or advice is greatly appreciated.

Yes, this was at a local community college. My friend had very little problem getting into the class to do this. I know some schools offer RN refresher courses, but I have not heard of any LPN refresher courses.

I hope this helps. I would check into this soon, as classes will be starting in a couple of weeks. This may go under auditing the class. Good luck!
