I missed work twice last week because my son (age 9) got burned on his foot and leg when he and his brother (age 11) were playing with gasoline and a lighter. Josh tried to stomp out a fire and his foot caught on fire. I took him to ER wednesday evening. then to his Dr. on thursday morning, who sent him to the burn center in wichita. His Dr. was concerned about contractures since it involved so much of his foot. The burn doctors said it was too soon to tell if it would heal right on its own or require surgery. It was 2nd degree but extensive. I took him back to burn specialist in wichita today. Go back next week. I have to change the dressing every day.

Betty, I'd like to join everybody in wishing you and your son a quick and full recovery. You're not alone - boys just seem to be facinated by things like that. We had a neighbor who's boys (about the ages of yours) did pretty much the same thing but with a can of hairspray and a lighter. They learned that this combination results in a blowtorch. The younger one ended up with extensive burns on his leg and foot. He never required any surgery, and didn't seem to have any residual except scarring. Hope everything goes well for your son, too. Sorry to hear about your son. Hope all goes well. My wife was a nurse for several years in the burn center at St Francis, they have a great staff there. Tell them hi from the McHugh's. The burn docs there are great as well, pretty much no matter which one you get.

WOW---- I am so sorry about this. What an awful thing.

My son, a few years back, was playing w/lighters and fire with a friend. He and I were lucky. The cops caught him and his friend in the act, and he had to go thru the Fire Department's fireplay intervention program for youth, which included watching some very graphic films and being really raked over coals by the firemen. Then, he had to sign a petition never to touch a lighter or matches w/o calling me first and after 6 mo, was allowed to tour the fire station w/the same fireman who yelled at him about his ways. It worked. He never did it again. I am so glad they were to hard on him.....he could have been hurt, as your boy was.

What I want you NOT to do is blame yourself. OK? PLEASE let yourself off the hook if you do....because....

Gosh-darnit, sometimes, despite our best intentions and teaching, KIDS DO SUCH STUPID THINGS---and sometimes pay a huge price. I am so sorry this happened. I wish you and your boy the best. Will you PLEASE let us know how things go? Thinking of you........((((GREAT BIG HUGS))))
