Seeking OB/GYN opinion...

Ok....for all you fantastic OB nurses out there, I have a what seems to me to be a mind-boggling question.

I went to the docs earlier this morning feeling generally unwell...nauseous, vomiting, headachy....with intermittent quite severe stabbing abdo pain. My thought was a flulike illness till I started getting the abdo pain, which is when I headed off down to the docs. He did a few blood tests and then brought me back in a few hours later and told me that I was pregnant. I insisted that this is not possible. I have not had any sex for more than a year. He just shook his head and said no way, you must have forgotten that it happened or something because the blood tests confirm you are pregnant. Forget?!?! Pfffftt...if something like that happened in the middle of my insane work and social schedule, then I definitely wouldn't be forgetting about it. :chuckle

So what I want to know is whether there are any illnesses or conditions that can mimic the results of a pregnancy test. My doctor insists that he's found the solution to the problem and won't even listen to me about investigating any other things. I'm just hoping it goes away but if it continues, I'll be seeking a specialist opinion, but not sure whether to go to the OB/GYN or a general surgeon.

OB/GYN second opinion. There are urban legends of an egg being made up of the 46 chromosomes of the mother, therefore not requiring a father. No one has ever been able to prove this. Go see a good OB/GYN and tell him/her what you have been told, and see what is diagnosed. Then, let us know!

Gee, I thought that one had to HAVE sex in order to get pregnant. Wish I could get pregnant.

I only said that was an urban legend. Totally unproved. You know-- the teen-ager that arrives in ER crowning, and "is a virgin." That type of stuff.;) To my knowledge, there was only one Immaculate Conception, and that was a long long time ago.:zzzzz

could it be a molar pregnancy?? I thought there was a type pf those that could happen without actual intercourse...

Problem with the ovaries? I'd definately have them checked/ultrasound.

The hormones from dysfunctional ovaries could be what is causing the symptoms....and the positive pregnancy test.

'What do the test results mean?

Because the placenta produces HCG, it is an indicator of pregnancy. This test is not able to tell whether or not the pregnancy is healthy. Certain conditions besides pregnancy may cause a positive pregnancy test. These include: - a tumor of the placenta with death of the fetus - ovarian cancer and other types of cancer in some cases - blood or protein in the urine, which can interfere with the result - use of medications to prevent seizures, drugs to treat Parkinson's syndrome, or phenothiazine drugs, such as chlorpromazine, by the mother.'

I would get a second opinion ASAP.

What about an ultrasound? Did he say how far along he "thought" you would be? I would definitely get a second opinion!

A quick search of of some websites shows that false positive pregnancy tests results occur for a variety of reasons such as:

Elevated Levels of LH - the ovulation inducing hormone

LH is chemically similar to hCG1, and especially in women with PCOS, elevated levels of LH can cause a false positive.

Also Some women have a low level of hCG-like material circulating at all times, this may cause a false positive in rare cases, especially in very sensitive tests.

Did you have a urine test done along with the bloodtest? Apparently you should have a urine test when the blood test results are questionable see links.

I was thinking hydatiform molar pregnancy too.

Nope, no other things. Sex to me includes all those things. Have not had the time, nor inclination for sex or anything that goes along with it. If I'd been pregnant, then I would have popped the sucker out well and truly by now. From what I've read about the molar pregnancy, after someone suggested it, I doubt that could be it. That would still require sexual activity (of some description) more recently than around 10 months ago surely....this problem has come on fairly recently...in the last couple of days...not over a prolonged period of time.

As far as how far along he thought I might be, when I asked him that, he said think of the last time you had sex and that would be roughly right. He also said that he's not an OB expert so how would he know? So yeah, I'm supposedly 10 maybe 12 months pregnant according to his logic.

I don't have a family hx of PCOS but had irregular periods when I was a teen so they whacked me on the pill to regulate them. I'm not due for a period for weeks yet and I've been taking my pill religiously for ten years. But other than that, there's been no real medical/surgical problems for me to date. Except for my tonsils, I still have everything I was born with.

I phoned the GP's practice back early this morning to put in a complaint about his flippant attitude towards me. There's a group of four doctors practicing there and over the past 5yrs, I've seen the other three and this is the first time I've ever had a problem. I spoke to one of the other doctors, who apologised for my treatment yesterday and brought me in for a redraw of the bloods they did yesterday plus some additional ones.

She said a urine test wasn't necessary because she doesn't think I'm pregnant. The nausea and vomiting has decreased....but still getting the occasional stabs of pain. Pelvic/abdo USS is booked for this afternoon to exclude any nasty pathology lurking around the general vicinity, which she would like to exclude the possibility rather than let it slide. Based on the results of that, she'll refer me to an OB/GYN.
