read any good books lately?

I am a student finishing up my prerequisites for nursing. I am also an avid reader and would like some advice on any good nursing related books. I like fiction and nonfiction, reference books, anything. I am especially interested in Mother/child, NICU, Pediatrics, etc. Any books related to true story child abuse (like a boy called it), life in the hospital, ....you name it. Help me out please, I spend gobs of money on books and would like to know I`m getting something worth my while. Thanks.:specs:

Well, this isn't really nursing related, BUT it does give you a good perspective of a patient's point of view....

It's Not About The Bike by Lance Armstrong.

I also enjoy reading Chicken Soup for the Nurse's Soul.

As for your specific interest I have nothing to offer, sorry! Good Luck though.

Actually, you just reminded me :)

We have an AllNurses book club. The last book we read (ahem..nearly 2 months ago) was Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons. I LOVED it.

I should really post a discussion about it and get to picking new titles soon.

I can think of several adjectives to describe the books I read, but 'brilliant' is not one of them. Once I actually said out loud, 'is it legal to publish this?'

Nurse2bee, you might enjoy Perri Klass's books. Start with A Not Entirely Benign Procedure (her first) and go from there.

Ok, some of my favorites:

Paris Trout by Pete Dexter

Wild at Heart by Barry Gifford

American Psycho, The Informers, anything else by Bret Easton Ellis (my chief literary influence :D, the man is a fargin' freak)

Lives of the Monster Dogs by Kirsten Bakis (this one is really good, but I think she was a one book wonder)

Idoru by William Gibson

Um, anything by Georce Alec Effinger

Tropic of Cancer or anything else by Henry Miller

I like male writers. Go figure. They have something to say, and say it much more succinctly than most female authors I've read. Most of the books I've read by women start out strongly and end up in a fuzzy lovefest by the climax.

There is also this really cool book I have about a pedophile/predator... I'll have to look for it and get back to you. Its chilling.

I read Intensive Care by Echo Heron, and LOVED it! I'm now reading her book Tending Lives and it is really good as well.:)
