PSA to our colleagues conducting research on Allnurses

Nurses General Nursing

Published

One of the most difficult surveys to conduct are online surveys, because it takes people willing to actively stop what they're doing, and take personal time out of their day to follow the stinking links and enter their answers.

Those that blow through here and drop a bomb of, "Please help me conduct my MSN/Capstone project!" and yet can't take a few minutes themselves to respond to their own threads -- pretty much stink.

There are thousands of nurses in here, and many of us will need each other to help gather data in our own future projects. This could be a great place for such data-gathering.

So, please, if you are going to present a plea for respondents, at least respond to your own thread.

Kthxbye.

Edit to add: mods will have this thread moved to the unseen hinterlands of the "Colleague/relations" forums before I can click my little red slippers. Cue the flying monkeys. :)

Then correction to the question NOBODY seems to want to actually answer:

Other than a 500 word minimum, what is the difference between a post and an article? What makes these 501 random words a post but those 501 random words an article?

Personally if I read a topic which reads like an article will PM the OP and ask if they want it to be turned into an article, sometimes they respond and sometimes they don't. If they want to turn it into an article they just have to write a brief summary.

There is nothing stopping anybody writing an article, and there is nothing stopping you reporting a thread you feel is suitable to be turned into an article to the admin dept.

Any member can write what they believe to be an article and submit.

I searched the web last night and most of the academic articles were in such web sites as Medscape, ANNA ect.

Most websites, do funny antidotal random rambling articles, which cover topics which are current or dear to their hearts. Some have some references at the end, does that make them academia? No

Companies often use monkey surveys nowadays, maybe this is the way forward for the student too?

I am not condoning the use of surveys to prove your dissertation but maybe it has its uses? We are not really here to judge where students get their information from, that is the job of the lecturers.

(I also want to extend a note of personal gratitude to the mods and Admins of AN for responding, and also allowing this little thread to fly and be free.)

Tough topics are tough. I am the better for the discussion that has ensued.

This has been a heathy discussion, with no personal insults- I love it when we can discuss issues close to our hearts without getting personal. I often will not indulge in debates anymore, because in the beginning I would get so passionate about the debates and take them so personally I would think about it all day LOL.

Now I just enjoy my duties as a moderator-read lots and lots of threads plus responses and restrain myself from commenting.

From my beginning on allnurses I would write in my blogs and enjoyed doing it. Now I just find something I am interesting in and think maybe somebody might enjoy reading and write an article.

I am so busy in my life and my jobs-one I get paid for and the other I volunteer. That often I find I only want brief information about what is happening in the world, so I enjoy the information I get from the web to keep me updated. If I want more in-depth information then my search would go much deeper.

The nice thing for all members is if they write an article on here, it goes on the front page and gives everybody a chance to read it. For some it maybe the start of something wonderful.

Brian sometimes gets a lot of grief from some members, yet I have never met a nicer man, who really really cares.

While manifestly true, this isn't really related to what we were trying to communicate. We were hoping you'd (collective you) see an opportunity to do something bigger and better, to really benefit the profession, not just be an amusing, time-wasting diversion from real life. People have Facebook for that, ferhevvinsakes.

We got asked to discuss this. Some people even thought it was one of the best threads evah. And now, well? There's backing off and "we're not discussing gold standards for care, we're just for social networking and entertainment."

Some of us find this disappointing. Please reconsider.

We hear you and I know Brian and his admin team have discussed this, but things are never as simple as it might appear. There are mine fields out there and lawyers have to be involved to advise if you step over the mark.

I agree with you all it would be fantastic if part of allnurses could be dedicated to full blown academia research but I am sure I will be corrected there are rules and regs which govern the internet now, and i have a feeling it would be much more difficult than just opening up a forum.

Everybody contributing to this thread has really good ideas, and I know that Brian and his team will be sitting up and taking notice.

I want to thank everyone, particularly GrnTea, for your contributions in this thread. It was a much-needed breath of fresh air and I wholeheartedly agree. As someone who is in a Master's program at , I admit to being dismayed at some of the projects that fellow WGUers are doing and passing off as Master's-level research. Maybe I'm jaded because I spent the past two years working in research at an academic teaching hospital, but I know my research colleagues would be scoffing at some of the surveys presented under the guise of "research". (and just because I'm very excited about it, the meat of my Master's capstone will most likely be a randomized case-control study on the benefits of prenatal breastfeeding education)

There's a huge thing stopping me. NOBODY has defined the difference between an "article" and any other "post."

Somebody fill in this sentence, "The difference between an article and a post is an article is ... while a post is ..."

Articles, journals, reviews, cartoons, photos, comments, replies, threads, topics, etc are all CONTENT. Content absorbed by our readers. Content created by our readers.

We give authors a choice. How they are displayed is NOT up to you. It is up to the individual authors.

We made a choice to format CONTENT differently based on how they are perceived by the author or how the author wants people to identify it. This makes it easy to find. This makes it easy to read.

You may be interested in one aspect of allnurses. Another will be interested in the opposite. Our job is to make sure there is something for EVERYONE. Something for the whole WORLD... Our audience is big.

To the original poster,

Sorry this has gone off topic. I am now closing this topic for this reason.

Rest assure, we agree with your thoughts. We will look into how we can improve the "research request" process.

allnurses is free to everyone. How you use it is up to you.
