PLEASE say something POSITIVE about Nursing

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I've been reading and hearing so many negative things about the nursing field and would like to hear from nurses who enjoy their jobs.

What do you like about it?

Where do you feel nursing is headed in the future?

How do you deal with co-workers who are negative about nursing? How do you NOT let them drain you?

Does nursing ever depress you? How do you deal with the suffering?

Thank you for your input. I have the greatest admiration and respect for nurses!

Like someone else said "Flexibiltity" I can take days with other nurses if I need a day off. If I get tired of my job I can do something else. I'm transferring to ICU this week I'm so excited, and somewhat scared!

I make a decent salary. I can get another job at a moments notice. There is always extra hours available if I want them. I get to meet a lot of people. I am always learning. I have suggested helpful things to family members that I wouldn't have know about if I weren't a nurse. I get to dress very comfortably at work.

what I love about nursing....

I love when patient you are taking care of, smiles, holds your hands and thanks you.

I love when family members get to know you and treat you with respect.

I love it when what I did, truly makes a difference in people's lives and those patients and their families come back to give you a hug :)

I love it when regardless of the long hours, the sucky pay, the horrible management, the poop, the pee and blood, there is that patient who needs my care in order to live....

I love it when nurses stick together and speak up to stand up for understaffing and unfair treatment.

I just love it!

And that says it all for me, too. Amen a trillion times over Pamelita. :nurse:

Nursing puts you in a position to help others, firsthand, one on one, and usually in a difficult situation. I've worked at a variety of jobs in my life, and none comes close to the satisfaction I get through nursing. You don't get to change the world, but you do get to make a difference in the little world of many people.

Another well written post comment that expresses my sentiments exactly! (thumbs up nursethis) :nurse:

I think its great reading positive comments by people who love their jobs. It's so much more comforting reading these posts than the negative ones :)

Well OP what do you think?

lots of "positives" here.

Simply and selfishly: I do this because I haven't done anything in nursing yet that I absolutely hated. Even tough jobs have their moments of joy and accomplishment, and I go home most of the time exhausted, but with a warm heart. I'm currently a CNS with a focus on staff education and that's great too. What a wonderful career! Nursemouse.:D

I like nursing for many of the reasons previously posted.

I love people, I enjoy working with patients and their families during tough times.

I enjoy seeing patients/families learn.

I love to teach.

I love the human body, it never ceases to amaze me, it is never the same, always unique.

To me, nursing is like a puzzle, I have all of these pieces, all of the technology, and it get to put it together to make a positive outcome.

The technology is fascinating, amazing, always changing.

I learn something new every day, with every patient.

It had helped me learn about myself, my own relationships.

I enjoy my coworkers, we are a team, we work together, we share a bond unlike those of my non-nursing friends.

Flexibility of hours/job "sites"/even pay.

Decent pay.

Ability to continue on in my career with schooling/management.

Anyway, that is just a few. But you get the point. As Noney stated, it is what you make it. There are good day and bad days. Good coworkers and bad. Good docs/Bad docs, same with management and every other department. I enjoy nursing, would have taken the same path if I had to do it over.

You all have such wonderful ways of describing your feelings and all that was said is so very true. Hope that helps you poster! However tired or disenchanted we may all eventually sometimes feel, the bottom line is that it is just a great thing to be a nurse!

Whoops, accidently started a thread after reading the negative aspects of nursing! Wish that I ventured here first. I want to love nursing. I have met quite a few nurses that LOVE their jobs and that is the attitude I want to emulate! I just want to help people. I want to have skills if there is another Hurricacne Katrina disater or voluteer to do some time in a third world country. The nursing philosophy is what keeps me out of med school--I WANT TO BE A NURSE!!! No matter how we are and in my case will be treated as a nurse, it is a noble profession. One that makes me know that I am doing some good--I hope. Only a nurse-to-be here, but I am excited about the future!

what do you like about it?i like the mobility and listening as well as understanding what is happening with the human body. i also like teaching the patients.

where do you feel nursing is headed in the future? not sure, but plan to be a part of it.

how do you deal with co-workers who are negative about nursing? how do you not let them drain you? hard to answer that one, because they do drain me. however, i tune them out for the most part, and have to talk to myself and other nurses that work in other places; they have become my mentors and they encourage me a great deal.

does nursing ever depress you? how do you deal with the suffering? it is depressing to me because there is a high volume of patients that enter into my clinic. i try and deal with it by teaching as much as i can and i have learned to seperate myself from them. there are a few that 'follow me home', but i place it in perspective and move on. it is the only way to function otherwise, you will fall apart with them. meditation and reading help me a great deal!

I am one of these peeps that always wanted to be a nurse from a very early age.

I love the flexibility, mobility and absolute variety of choices as to what field you wish to work in.

It gives me the greatest satisfaction that at the end of the day I can say yes I did good!

I have met the most closest friends in this field.

I do not allow negativity to affect me. I choose not to talk about things that are petty. I just excuse myself from the conversation and hit the road LOL That is what is the best part of my day, the office keeps changing where ever I am LOL

I never talk about work with mates after hours I just tell them I am not at work and really would love to talk about life in general etc

Nursing has given me freedom, experience, confidence, knowledge, and common sense LOL (most of the time)

I work in hospice and find that this has to be the most rewarding job I have ever had in my career.

Nursing is truly a great profession in my eyes.

pamelita -- you said most of what i wanted to say. all i need to add is that i love knowing that the harder the shift the more you enjoy talking about it with others 2-3 years from that date! however, it's no fun when it's happening, no way, no how, no fun!
