so are you meaning an acute pain clinic? as in post op patients? before I ramble on and on I wanna make sure we are on the same page...:)

Sorry, I didn't think to include that. These will be patients with chronic pain problems, such as back pain...

I imagine you will be coordinating/assisting with ESI's, nerve blocks, rhizotomies, and implantable narcotic pumps.

I've been on the receiving end of these procedures...but in outpatient facilities with pain specialists anesthesiologists performing the procedures.

These are all done under conscious sedation Versed and Diprivan in my area...and under C-arm.

I don't know if this is the info you seek or not..but good luck! Chronic pain patients are hard towork with sometimes but it can be rewarding to see them feel better and have a life again. :)

i've had several epidural steroid injections at a "pain center" located in the PACU of the hospital. Four beds were devoted to these procedures.

It was mostly just like outpatient surgery preparation, with out the labs. Got a brief H&P, IV started then taken to a tiny procedure room like Mattsmom said. Afterwards you return to PACU ---about 10 feet away---are "recovered" for about 30 minutes or until the versed and the local wear off....a couple of mine ended up as "wet sticks" so once I stayed several hours. Anyway..that's my experience from the inside as a patient.

I won't go into how mine went other than the Nurses there were wonderful and the doctor was.......hmmmm. Oh and I got NO relief just possible arachnoid inflammation.

Hi I am new to these boards. I am currently working in an Outpatient surgery center, besides all of the variety of out patient surgeries that are done here, we also do Pain patients. As Mattsmom said you will probably be doing a lot of ESI's, Stellate ganglion blocks, facet joint injections, RF lesionings, etc. We admit our Patients like surgery patients only with a little briefer assessment/paperwork and the ones that usually need labs are the patients that haven't been off of coumadin for 10 days or they are having a discogram. These are all done under concious sedation using versed, fentanyl and diprovan.

Some afternoons we do up to 15- 18 patients. As mattsmom said some of these patients can be quite challenging, but it is quite nice to see the ones that it has actually helped and has improved their quality of life. Good luck to you!:)

Hey everyone! I need some background info on Pain Clinics. The OR where I work is getting ready to start a clinic. My main focus is the coordinating nurse and her role in the clinic. I know that she will initially see the patient etc. Can anyone give me any idea of what to expect...eventually this position will turn into coordinator.

did you google search? I was looking into a job at a pain clinic, and wanted to know what to expect (did not work out for me), but I found a couple of places on line, and I learned a lot about the area. Give it a try.
