Online Microbiology

After reading many postings about A&P online, where some are all for it, but some are completely against it, I wanted to get your opinions on taking Microbiology online, as I planned to take it this summer through CCCOnline. I need an A, it's an absolute must, so I value your opinions very much.

I am taking this semester with ccconline.org. You have to be motivated to study on your own and to keep up. You have quiz, lab, writing assignment and discussions that are mandatory that you participate at least twice a week. You can make an "A" if you read the chapters, understand the labs and stay on top of things. What I like is there are enough of points for every week that if you mess up a time or two, you can still do well. I only study on weekends and I have Anatomy & Physiology I and Ethics!!

I took micro tow semesters ago and it was challenging enough by going to classes. I did finish with an A+, but it was difficult with all the other nursing courses. ensure that you allow sufficient time for this course. it is alot of work, but be encouraged, it is also very interesting and can be fun!

I've said it before, and I'll say it again... I would not take any difficult, lab-based science online unless it was absolutely necessary and/or unless you were a VERY strong and VERY motivated student. If you have the option to take it "in person," I would choose that option without a doubt. I've found that instructor and classmate interaction is especially helpful in those types of classes.

(Not to mention that I've struggled with some online sciences myself, but I believe part of that has to do with the fact that I personally absorb a large amount of information aurally, so I really miss out when I'm not in lecture)

I must say I really love my online classes. I have taken chemistry, psychology, sociology, writing, microcomputer applications, and all my other prereqs online, including A & P 231 and am in the middle of 232 online (with thursday night lab for three hours). I plan to take all my classes online if available. I learn better and absorb more information if I just sit down and do it at home. We do have tests online but we also have an essay exam in lab but for the lecture part. I think it's great especially if you're working and can't have a 'set' schedule.

I too Micro at CCC a few years ago,

I believe I got a B and it truly wasn' ALOt of work

but you do have to keep up with everything

I really think your success in an online medium depends on the type of learner you are. I'm a very visual learner - I need to have it in front of me in writing in order to absorb it. I am also an independent learner and prefer to figure it out on my own rather than ask the professor if I have a question. So online classes work well for me (I'm finishing up Human Bio online right now and LOVED it, I'll be starting Micro in about three weeks).

If you're the type of person who learns best through listening to lectures and participating in class discussions, then online classes might not be a very good option for you.

Has anybody here taken an online course through Canyon College? Also, do most graduate nursing programs accept on-line classes?

I would actually prefer to take it in person, but my schedule is not comfortably allowing for that, unless I take off a month of work. I appreciate all your replies - it's definitely a tough one. I am absolutely going to take A&P in person though.

I do have concerns about how the graduate schools view this class, but I suppose I'll just have to take a chance on that...

I took Microbiology last semester. Got an A - but it is not an easy class. I'm not sure how much value you would get from taking such a class online. The laboratory section of the course, I believe, is a vital part of being able to understand what is going on. It's easy to memorize the different types of pathogenic bacteria, but its a whole different matter, being able to take a culture [from the throat for instance] and be able to grow it on the appropriate nutrient medium - isolate the colonies - gram stain them - and use additional tests to identify them.

Yes, the clinical labs will do all of that for you... but what about learning aseptic technique. This is a skill that has appliaction in all parts of the nursing profession... I say take the class with a lab. You'll get a lot more out of it.

I took Microbiology through the University of Idaho. It was a self-paced course. VERY easy, with no lab. Here is the link, if you are interested.

I have no experience with this school, but there are postings in the Student Nursing thread (I think...) that address the college. You may want to look into it before you proceed.
