Nurse Practioner Experience requirements

Nurses General Nursing

HELLO I have a quick question ! I'm wondering as a new graduate if I choose a job in a clinic such as womans clinic will it count towards the clinical experience I need to go to grad school for NP or does it have to be in a hospital

Setting ?

Specializes in FNP.

Depends on the school. Ask admissions counselors at programs you are interested in.

I don't have an answer, but I'm sure that with all the knowledgeable people in this forum, you'll get one soon. I also want to go to grad school for Neonatal PN, so I also need that info:)

I suppose it's possible, but I doubt it. The work you would be doing at the clinic would be that of an RN. The NP's role is quite different; in grad school, you'll be paired with an NP.

Specializes in NICU.

If you want to go to school as a neonatal NP, you have to work in a level 3 NICU for 2 years. Check out the NICU forum under specialty-->critical care-->NICU

This requirement has been made of every university I've come across from, largely because you must have that experience in order to take the NNP boards by the NCC.

Now I get it. Thanks, babyRN.

Can anyone tell me what the requirement is for Acute Care CNS??

Specializes in NICU.

Many programs require no experience for NP school besides becoming a nurse anesthetist, PNP, and NNP, there are no real requirements unless set specifically by the school. It's better for you to look into colleges that you are interested in and look at their requirements. Good luck!

Thank you, I got scared when I saw this post because the school I looked at did not show any requirements for working in a hospital prior to applying. The only requirement they had listed was a BSN and License. I will double check though, just in case I have gotten lax in my research. :D
