Need help making a decision

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I have two jobs right now. The first is fulltime as a nurse in a urology office. I make $14.49 an hour plus $200 per month bonus because I dont have their insurance. I work M-F 8-5. Overtime is NOT allowed under any circumstances. Most of the people I work with are older, have been there forever, and are very set in their ways. The doctor I work with is ok....but larely has some major attitude and disrespect issues. The second job is parttime in a LTC facility. I primarily work the skilled unit but sometimes float to other units as well. I only work on the weekends. I make $18.25 an hour. Here is the deal. The LTC is wanting me to come for them fulltime. They are going to 12-hour shifts in April....so I would only have to work three days a week. They do require every other weekend....and they will let you get as much overtime as you are willing to work. I am having a really hard time maing this decision. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

It sounds like you like the LTC more, and frankly working directly with a physician can be rough. LTC sorta gets away from that in a way. Not everyone adores the M-F schedule. I actually just left a 3 12 Critical Care job to go to a M-F Case Management gig, but my son is little and enjoys seeing me a little bit every day as opposed to not at all for 3-4 days in a row and then gets "zombie Mommy." Everyone has different needs. Your son is probably old enough to where he has his own friends and own thing going on and doesn't necessarily need to see you every day. Plus the 4 days off a week can be nice. :) Plus the 4 bucks an hour really adds up...you'd be making what you are at the do at the dr's office and working LESS!

Good luck in whatever you decide!

I'm kind of with you on that. Office work is so much nicer and you can't put a price on lifestyle.

I cannot FATHOM why any nurse would leave an office gig for LTC.

If you need to make up the salary difference.. take 2 days a month somewhere.. .

Are you a RN or PN?

What are your priorities for working? You mentioned that you have a supportive husband and older child. Is it to just get buy or do you really place a premium on maintaing your skills?

I would talk to other nurses who are full time at the LTC to see how they like it there. Sounds like you are not so much of a risk taker and don't like change. Nothing wrong with that.

Doctors Office $2,518.40 monthly w/bonus

LTC $18.25 x 24 x4 = $1,752.00

total income : $4. 270.40 x 13 = $55, 515.20 with no insurance

Just the LTC job at $18.25 x 72 hrs = $2,628.00 or $34,164.00

An overview of the financial choice here. I'm assuming as a full time employee at the LTC center, you would get full benefits and I know you mentioned overtime so i'll bump it up to $40k with 3-4days off.

Both jobs - higher pay, stability at the doctor's office

LTC job- lower annual pay, full benefits or at least insurance- not sure if you need it if husband carries it, maintenance of some/more nursing skills

Negatives

Both jobs- work more hours, less nursing skills practiced

LTC job- less pay, longer days worked, leaving job with almost 2 yrs experienced

hope this helps but follow your gut.

I would keep doing both if possible. I worked an office gig m-f and then did homecare on sat and sun when I wanted. It worked out great. I got to keep my skills up with the weekend homecare, and I kept my 8hr days m-f which were great. Not to mention I worked when I wanted on the weekends - usually every other. In the winter I worked more, and in the summer when it was nice I worked less. I would say do both especially if you need the money.. but that is just my :twocents:. Good luck with whatever choice you make.

I would choose the ltc facility because it 1. Pays more2. You would more days off so you could always get another Pt job3. If your boss is disrespectful and full of attitude (which is obv bothering you because you mentioned it) it may just get worse Look at the bright side- it's YOUR choice , congrats on the offer

I am having a hard time understanding your math. how is more pay less income a year?

14.49 X 40 = 579.60 x 52 weeks = 30139.2/yr plus 2400/yr in bonus (how are you getting 55K plus per yr?)

18.25 x 36 = 657 x 52 = 34,164 plus benefits plus OT

I think the poster was figuring in my income from my part time position at LTC facility....which I am not counting with income because I cant and wont work 7 days a week forever. The way the 55k is figured....I would be working 365 days a year to make that...not practical and not going to happen!

I agree with PP, sounds like you already decided on LTC, but you were afraid to leave your other job since it's more cushy, and what a lot of people go for since the hours are better (nothing wrong with that, hours more conducive to family life than hospital work, as well, but that's not what you seem to value). You seem to care more about working environment/rewarding job than hours (I'm the same way; I get burnt out if my job is not rewarding or challenging). The fact that you liked working weekends, a "break in your routine" as you said, tells me that you really don't like the routine of the office. People want breaks in their routine when they don't like the "routine" they have, and you said the doc was a jerk, and the nurses are set in their ways. You really didn't say anything positive about that job other than the hours. And, 3 12's can work really well for families, I hear (though I don't have a family yet lol).

If the LTC facility has good staffing, and awesome people to work with, I personally would choose LTC. Oh, and you get paid more in LTC.

Best of luck making the decision that's best for you and your family! :)

I would talk to the doctor that you work for and tell him about the offer and how much you would make there. You never know, he may offer you a raise to stay...

Decision made! I'm resigning from the office job and going fulltime at LTC facility....100% satisfied with my decision...thanks for all the input!!
