Need advice on medical insurance...

O.K. - I'm hoping someone has some suggestions. I work per diem, which means I get no benefits. Which is fine, except I need to find some good but reasonably priced medical, dental, vision and prescription coverage for myself.

I've tried looking everywhere, but I swear all the agents I speak with make my skin crawl. They are like sleazy used-car dealers. I just know I'm being taken advantage of but don't know how to find insurance through 'normal' agents.

All I want is basic coverage and what most of them try to push is this 'catastrophic' coverage where my deductible is $5,000. What!???! Don't they listen? :banghead:

I'm going crazy folks! Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I have seen these people advertize on TV

I have no idea how good they are. They do advertize that they provide flexible health plans based on a persons needs.

Weetzie,

Insurance is regulated by state, so what one person here says works for them probably won't apply in your state. The policies are totally different by state. I'd check out your state department of insurance or insurance commissioner's website. Usually they will list the companies offering individual health insurance and also the companies' complaint ratios from consumers. Sometimes the best coverage available isn't through agents or brokers. For example, in some states Blue Cross Blue Shield is only available direct, not through at agent. Good luck. Health insurance in these Untied States is a trainwreck.

Thanks, guys.

I know soo little about the insurance industry. Never knew it differs from state to state.

I'll check out some ideas you've given me.

Wish I could get a benefitted position but I have an entire hospital full of nurses with more seniority, so not much sense in waiting for that to happen.

Probably not much sense in waiting to have the healthcare mess in this country fixed either - no doubt be looooooooong retired by the time that happens!

My daughter had to leave a local job she liked because of no benefits. She got a state job 35 mi away where they pay for her health insurance/drug coverage/dental. It's actually less salary, but it adds up to twice the net when you count the benefits.

yeah, i know what you mean. health care coverage is astronomically expensive! wouldn't you just know this happens to be a job i love? they do give me a generous allowance towards my own insurance but i've kind of gotten used to it being 'extra money' and hate to spend it on insurance.

My former employer's insurance plan had different levels.

40 hours cost XXX but you paid X

32 hours cost XXX but you paid XX

24 hrs cost XXX but you paid XX 1/2.

I wonder if you could present your employer with this option? You'd perhaps also do well to agree to a higher co-pay and deductable. Wouldn't hurt to ask.

anything more than 24/28 hours is totally benefitted. but per diem is assured of only 5 days work each month, so they just add additional money to your paycheck. thankfully, i'm working full time at the moment, though told this could change after the new year. trying to save $$ now in case that does happen - so i can manage to hang in there till more hours are available.

but thanks for the suggestion.:wink2:
