maybe I WONT go into nursing!

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I have read some super scary threads on here about nurses and accusations of testing postive for drugs, being accused of stealing drugs, AND being fired for being on a PRESCRIPTION drug.

Needless to say..I thought nowadays with all the Freaking paper work I hear nurses have to do, that there would be SECURE , FOOL PROOF, measures of protection of innocent persons.

I am NOT a nurse. I am strongly thinking about going into nursing. However, I dont want to be the fall guy for someone and their drug abuse or be accused of taking/stealing drugs!

Arent there methods (such as two people signing wehn there is a drug count) for protection of people?

Im my program we did practice injections on one another.

Re: the narcotic blame issue...I've worked 2 places where an RN was diverting drugs. Suspicion does cast upon everyone but in each case the abusing RN was found out.

Practice good solid nursing and do the narcotics procedures to the letter. Never sign something you didn't do or for a waste you didn't see. In my experiences, the abusing RNs would get people to sign things they should not have to cover themselves.

I did most of my pre-pharmacy at a community college that had a nursing program, and one day, I happened to be sharing a table with a young woman and we struck up a conversation.

She was thinking about nursing, and assuming she already knew this, I mentioned something about nurses learning how to give shots by practicing on each other.

She didn't know that, and wasn't sure she wanted to be a nurse at that point. Better she found out then than on the day they did that!

We learned by doing it on each other. How else is it taught?

EKU"s Nursing program in Kentucky does the same. Injections and IV's are learned by doing on each other. May have changed but that's the way I learned also.

I've never heard of nurses learning how to give shots by practicing on each other.

We didn't 'practice' on each other, but we DID have to give each other shots. At one point we had to give each other shots, while the instructors watched. It was a 'test'. We drew up normal saline and did an IM and a SubQ injection. On each other. That was in the very first year of our nursing program.

Well I'm glad I went into nursing despite the "the bad & the ugly" there's still plenty of "good" to make it a great job most of the time!

If you want to be a nurse then let that be your choice & go out & be the best you can. We need good nurses!!
