Mandatory Inservices only offered on my "OFF"days!

What is the deal with this?! I have had 2 mandatory inservices the past month that are offered on multiple days but none of them my "on" days, so I have to arrange for someone else to care for my elderly FIL & Grandson and go into work on my days off:angryfire . This totally pixxes me off, and the girl who runs human resources always leaves nasty messages on my voice mail telling me they will either terminate me or remove me from the schedule if I do not pick one of those days, grrrr.

I have spoken to her on more than one occasion regarding this, and she always threatens my job.

I thought there was some law saying if a inservice was mandatory they must offer it during your scheduled day? If anyone knows where I can find this please let me know. I don't mind doing it, that's everywhere but my days off are spoken for, I have a life outside of work:uhoh3: , I know silly me..what am I thinking..

What is your facility's/state's policy on mandatory overtime? Sounds like this is boiling down to mandatory OT.

Are you in a unionized facility? If so I would contact a steward about your concerns.

I'm not sure to be honest with you. I work in MI, and am union (but they really don't do much for us) it probably wouldn't be considered overtime for me since I am a 30 hr a week/FT employee, but it seems unreasonable that these things are always scheduled on my off days and no one from HR is willing to offer them on my scheduled days..It is a very stressful job and frankly I want to be there only my 30 hours and no more,period. I thought there was a federal law stating mandatory inservices must be provided during your scheduled work hours?

Thank you for responding, I'm incredibly frustrated with the whole thing. I'ts hard for me to find at home coverage for my responsabilities to come in on my off days.

Stewards can't help if they don't know about a problem that affects a member. I would write up a brief note describing the problem and the name of the HR person. Ask the steward to make a contact on behalf of the members as to why the facility is not scheduling inservice on work days or at the very least scheduling inservice immediately prior to shifts or after shifts so training does not impinge on member days off.

Thank you, you make a good point, I will do that. I am on the schedule for this weekend, however this HR person left a VM on my phone saying if I didn't pick a day TODAY (my day off) and get back to her by the end of the day I would be removed from the schedule. Never mind my cert in this particular area doesn't expire until 5-11-07.

That is what really pissed me off. Fine, take me off the schedule then & I'll get 3 weekends off in a row-works for me!! She is so rude and nasty. I just do not respond well to threats, kwim?

I'm with you. There is no need to have 'mandatory' inservices. I like keeping informed, however I live an hour away. My husband and I work our schedule so that we never worry about childcare, when he works I'm off and so on... They always schedule these last minute and sometimes even cancel them. So basically I've made it my policy to never go to any of them. Somehow they manage to get the superviser to give them to us individually when it is 'truly' mandatory like during the weekends when I and other weekend people work. Frankly it works out better anyway. I get it when it's a conveinient time during my shift and it never takes near as long as one that was scheduled. Homecare had it the best when I worked there. You mailed in your insevices. Any skills tests that required you to be present were offered often and at all different times. They really understood that their nurses worked for them in order to have a flexible schedule and a good quality of life. Something I wish hospitals and nursing homes would learn!

Another thing: are they mandatory because something has actually changed, or because no one will show unless it's labelled mandatory?

Where I work the managers are required to have monthly meetings, if they don't, they get in trouble. We get tortured with the same thing over and over just to have a meeting. I refuse to go in on my time off for that!

Call her bluff. "Okay, take me off the schedule." If you can afford it. It's much nicer than telling her to kiss you where the sun don't shine.

What I dislike about the LTC where I work now is the fact that they have these 'mandatory' things at least once a month - sometimes more - and they are always in the middle of the day.

The night people are expected to crawl out of bed in the middle of our night to attend - then go back home and go to sleep.:uhoh3:

One more month, and I'm out of it forever!

Our mandatory meetings and inservices include lunch and a drawing for some sort of door prize. We get paid our hourly wage, plus I get $10 for mileage...it's a good deal.

You are getting paid for the extra time, right? My understanding is, if you have to come in on your day off for a mandatory meeting, they have to pay you.
