So my "friends" keep telling me that becoming a mail nurse is gay.

and the finance wise i wont be good later in life.

Just wanted to know how common are male nurse? are they look at differently from patients? I'm i less likely to get hired for being male?

Men joining the nursing profession is becoming more common daily. They're are great scholarships for male nurses, as you are underrepresented in the field. So, you may get lucky and get a full ride to nursing school. Their are quite a few men in my class, which begins this fall. As long as you're becoming a nurse because you love the work and want to help people, you'll be fine. There are politics in every profession, so that's inevitable my friend. Just do you. At the end, that's all that really matters :)

Look, I'll tell you what is gay, Mister...the way you spelled "mail" in the first sentence. Now that's gay!

Just to put in my 2 cents... my wife was an LVN for 10 years and when we met, she went on to get her RN. During that time she had 1 male in her nursing program in 2003. When I graduated from the same program in 2008, we had 17 men and 24 women!!! Nursing is a profession of people who CARE for other people regardless of race, sexuall orientation, religeon or whatever. Sounds like you have some pretty inmature "friends". I was a cable tv lineman before pursuing a nursing career, and most of the guys encouraged me to go for it while you still had few who were stupid. I loved my old job, but I really love being a Nurse!

OP,

19yr old pre-nursing student here. Let me first say over the past years I've been in football, competitive bodybuilding, wrestling, and right now I work as a well respected, certified personal trainer at a nearby gym...

My reason for saying this.. even if much of the public still has this misconception of nursing as being feminine and male nurses as gay.. trust me when I say that people will judge you for much more than just your profession.

Plus.. once I got into college, majority of my friends moved far off. I've met many more friends. From highschool to college is one hell of a change.. in all aspects of your life.

I questioned my choice as a nurse for this same reason at one point. I reasoned it all out. If you want it. GO FOR IT!!!

Now that is funny.

The best nurse I know is a male nurse. I was just out of school and at my first job. He was my preceptor. I don't know where I would be without him. I think you should go for it.

Specializes in oncology, med/surg (all kinds).

first of all, could someone please explain to me what is meant by a "troll?" second of all, i think the kid's mind is made up--he wants to be a nurse and is looking for a little reinforcement, which you gave him. finally my 2 cents...for what it's worth. i wish these things weren't true and they are not true all the time, i'm sure. i can only go by my own experiences.

male nurses are likely to be hired on a physically heavy floor. then, you will become the floors Big Strong Lifting Team--at the expense of taking care of your own patients. better learn to set some boundaries early! i notice male doctors seem to talk easier to male nurses. possibly respect them more? come to think of it, i noticed male docs treating the male dietitian very friendly and respectful. they did have the same length of lab coat......female docs(newbies anyway) have a world of issues dealing with other people non-docs, so we can't go there.

i actually knew a guy in nursing school who--with some difficulty--a labor and delivery nurse!!!!! not gay, big ol' manly man lookin' fella.

guess what? your friends are gay. they're gay and they smell. go be a nurse.

Being a male RN will make you MORE desirable as a boy friend/fiance/husband/father/whatever: better salary, more job prospects, more prestiege, more girlfriends. You're listening to the wrong people! Where I live, ALL nurses, male and female alike, are respected PROFESSIONALS. Gay is not much of an issue; gay people are EVERYWHERE, you just don't see them. I seem to notice a lot of -- ahem -- gay medical students and doctors.

Specializes in ccu, med surg, ltc, home health.

Male patients may feel more comfortable talking about some things or getting a bath from a male nurse. If a man is modest around a female nurse, I understand, being a woman. There are some things I don't understand about men and there are things about women that men don't understand. It is nothing do to with head knowledge but with gut feeling. That is why nurses and doctors should be of all sexes, orientations, religions.

At our facility the "mail nurse" is often one of the volunteers. The wonderful men and women RNs are usually too busy to deliver mail!

male nurses are very common and not necessarily gay. some are gay of course but then some doctors are gay as well. lab, radiology, or techs are gay, too. look at all healthcare providers, some are some aren't. i've not heard of instances where patients take some stand on whether to receive care from whom. i'd bet it's one of those non issues.
