Love med/surg?

I am debating on working in medsurg and was wondering how many of you out there absolutely love working in med/surg and why?

I've done it for 7 years. Some days I hate it, but with the situations, that would happen no matter the dept. Most days LOVE it. It's crazy, hectic, but most of all challenging. It's a great place to be.

I don't know if I can say that I loved it. But no one can deny that it's a perfect place to learn and gain valuable experience.

The reasons that I didn't love it are due solely to staffing issues and the ability to take all the necessary time with each patient. It is absolutely a stimulating and growth-encouraging environment.

I like working in med/surg, it's a good place to start, you learn about many different diseases, you learn to organize yourself, and prioritize. I can't say I love it but it's not due to the fact that it's med/surg, it's due to the fact that I have to work weekends and holidays, but that just comes with being a nurse!!

I was very fortunate to get a job on Med/Surg right out of nursing school. I learned so much and it was a great foundation. As other posters have mentioned it is hectic at times, but it is with any unit. There is much diversity of patients and illnesses/diseases.

I've already shared this the last time I encountered a similar concern.

The best training ground for budding nurses is the Med-surg adult care section. Through my experiences in that area, I can say that I have made the right choice. There you will master time management as you will be expected to handle, not just your patients or the different cases they present but also their relatives-they complain a lot (dealing with difficult relatives is a challenge for the nurse to be more patient, understanding, and to manifest grace under pressure)!

After passing the board, I worked in M/S right away. Now, after 8 years, I can say that I function efficiently and effectively with minimal supervision during the first few days of orientation in special areas (where I got rotations for several weeks in ICU, ER, and hemodialysis section) because I have a strong foundation with clinical nursing practice in medical-surgical unit. You will be more confident and rich with experiences which can be very helpful should you finally have to decide for a career path in the future.
