Does anyone have any information pertaining to a new grad for the above hospital? I am looking for information about their preceptorship program after graduation, new grad pay and anything else that may be beneficial. I'd like to hear it all (good or bad). If you always listen to the recruiters they make every place seem like a step away from heaven and then you start working there and find out from the staff it's nothing like you were told. Thnaks for any help you can give.

My cousin is a clinical educator RN there. She loves it, mostly for the educational environment and the opportunity to work with world class specialists.

I have been there several times on business with a pharmaceutical company. The area surrounding it is terrible, parking is difficult--but its not unlike many inner city hospitals.

When I graduated in 1998, they wanted me to work there as an RN for about $5.00 an hour LESS then everywhere else. THey figured that having the name HOPKINS on my resume would be enough. It didn't pay the bills, so I turned it down. It's in a terrible neighborhood and the parking prices suck. Too many other places to choose from.

Specializes in Medical/Surgical.

Hopkins saved my dads life 20 years ago (colon cancer). So I know they are good at some things :) They still have a good reputation, but I hear the nursing pay is significantly less then other hospitals in Maryland. I have no plans to try to get a job there, unless they up the pay. The name is not worth the decrease in $$.

I've been employed by Johns Hopkins Hospital in my current role for three years and previously at an agency that only provides supplemental staff to the hospital for 2 years before that.

After having been offered my current role which is a specialty and only I do, I thought long and hard about the perks and potential downfalls.

The wages are competitive and the hospital benefits I found to be excellent. I wouldn't work anywhere else.

The biggest benefit that I have experienced is that job performance is always expected to be greater than average, with striving consistently for excellence the norm. The constant challenge is satisfying! The hospital and university both hire nurses but the benefits and pay rates are different.

I ride the Metro which alleviates the parking and there are numerous security and police startegically located in the surrounding areas.

Certainly job satisfaction will vary in different departments and with different managers.

Good luck in your job search!

Please feel free to contact me if you have questions I may be able to answer.

The same thing is true for those who work at Johns Hopkins University in northern Baltimore. The pay is less than other jobs, but the benefits are fantastic. I think it's the benes rather than the name that attracts people. Plus it's now the only magnet hospital in MD.

But the parking issue is a good point. Luckily the metro goes there, which is easily accessible via the light rail. Safety is of course another concern.
