someone I know, but haven't seen for a while has sent email describing having a lingering cold, and now has noticed himself turning purple?
any ideas about why this might be?

More details needed. Turning purple in his face? Or fingertips? Or lips? Turning purple all over? After coughing? Or bruising?

Your friend needs to seek medical advice from his health care professional. Please encourage him to do this NOW. There is no way a bulletin board advice could possibly help and many ways it could harm.

not seeking ADVICE from the bulletin board - just ideas, as I stated in my post
The 'ideas' that would be given would be suggestions on why this might be. Which is similar to medical advice.
