I have a situation... Sort of :)

Ok, so I'm leaving my current job in less than two weeks. I'm suPposed to be starting a new job on the last Monday of the month. However, I've been speaking with someone off and on about this other Position for a while and an opening came up!! It's really my dream job, what I always wanted to do... And now there's an opening!!! There's a good chance I could get it, but the official interview can't be done until next week (I've already met with lady... But now need to have a formal interview with 3 peoPle).

So here's my situation I guess...

The official interview can't be done until mid next week, and I'm supposed to start my new job the following Monday. How do I make sure I know whether I got the job or not by that Friday? Should I mention this other job offer? I would need to know by Friday so I know whether I need to decline the other offer or not. (the job I'll be starting the Monday at the end of the month)

If I do get this job and they don't need me to start for another week, do you think it would be ok to ask my current job for a few more days of work? I know they could use me. Not sure if this would be appropriate though.

Any suggestions????

I think you should keep you job that you will be starting until you get an official offer from the new job.

If the job you want offers the position tell them you already started work and will be avail. in 2 weeks. That way you don't burn bridges...

If I am reading this correctly, you are waiting to leave the original job to start a new one. You have since found another one that you want but have not interviewed for yet, right?

I would stay at your original job a little bit longer (instead of leaving when you are supposed to) and then interview with the place you really want. I would tell them that you have another offer, so timing is a factor (nothing wrong with that, I have done that myself). If you don't get the dream job, I would consider just extending at your current place so you don't end up job hopping though (in case your dream job opens up again). This is all considering your current place is not too intolerable, of course :)

btw - I am assuming this new job (the one that starts the end of the month) is not what you truly want.

Lol... I think that sounds about right. I've already given my month notice to my current job, and I'm leaving for a few reasons. The main reason is it's not working well for me and my family (stress, hours, daycare, etc). I have already accepted this job offer, where I will be starting at the end of the month. No paperwork has been filled out yet, and it'll be done on the Monday at the end of the month when I start. It's not my dream job, but I will be pretty happy there if I don't get this OTHER job offer.

I have sort of interviewed already, but not with everyone. It wasn't official.

So you do think it's acceptable perhaps later that day after the interview or the next day to let them know I have another job Offer and need to know by the end of the week? I don't know if I could put off the job start date anymore than the end of the month... Since they originally will have waited a month for ms to start.

I'd ask all parties if your start at the new job could be extended by 2 weeks. I would NOT start a new job just to turn around and leave it.

Please dont start the other job just to turn around and leave it. Nothing sucks more than hiring a new employee to have them leave in a couple of weeks. If this job you have accepted is not the job you really want then stay where you are at for now, until you get the job of your dreams.

Please dont start the other job just to turn around and leave it. Nothing sucks more than hiring a new employee to have them leave in a couple of weeks. If this job you have accepted is not the job you really want then stay where you are at for now, until you get the job of your dreams.

Noooo... no no. I don't plan on doing this at all, and I do HAVE to leave my current job. It's causing A LOT of problems in many areas, and I need to leave asap. This job offer that I do have is a good job, and I will be MUCH MUCH happier... but the other job that I'll be interviewing for officially is what I have always wanted. And I really don't want to miss this opportunity. If I don't get it, it will be ok.. but I want to have at least tried. You know?

No, I wouldn't mention it at all. Just ask to change your start date. Do not offer a reason, and if they press for one, be vague. Just say something has come up with schedule coordination, etc. They can assume you mean childcare or something, lol. You haven't signed anything yet, so you really don't have the job officially. That makes it all too easy to lose IMO. Keep mum and stall.

I'm asking if I should mention that I have a job offer to the person I'm interviewing with next week.. so that they know I need to know of a decision quickly.

Asking when they want someone to start would be ok right?

Oh, yes. You are correct, I misunderstood which "they" we were talking about. :p Sorry.

Yes, I think it would be fine to tell job #3 that you have another offer (job #2) and need to give them (job #2) an answer and ask when a decision might be forthcoming. Perfectly OK to do that, so long as it doesn't come out sounding like a threat!
