I Hate Nursing School

I hate nursing school. Our school has a reputation for being one of the top 100 in the country (whatever that means), and in the area, it is known for being the toughest, but now in the last semester, I just hate it.

I want to learn the subjects we are learning, but I'm sick of arrogant instructors, stupid extra projects, and the continous stress of tests--that have to be passed with an 80% or better. I'm all about a C this semester. I couldn't care less what grade I get so long as I pass. I don't care about my GPA, I don't care about anything except passing and finishing this horrible program.

We have less than half our original class that started in level one, and people are failing now in level 4. We had 51 now we have 23. I'm doing alright, but I won't be getting an A this semester.

All I want is out, an official transcript, and then the place can burn to the ground for all I care.

Thanks for letting me vent.

Me too, Me too! I hate it, not at all what I thought it was going to be and I have a medical background, but what the hey..... I'll stick it out, but that doesn't mean I have to like it!:p

....and what the hell is the purpose of learning to write a care plan if we don't even do it in the real world anymore? Do you? Oh well, I guess if I gotta, I gotta.;)

You're right Lydia, didn't mean come down like that on him. I know ADRN's just venting and not a slacker, that was kind of tongue in cheek, but reading it over, does sound like an insult.

Just wanted to remind ADRN of the NCLEX and to not let up too much trying to get that C and "piece of paper". Getting that piece of paper isn't enough. You gotta get that other piece of paper call a license. :)

How nice. He apologizes to Lydia and not me. Oh what am I griping about. If I haven't learned how people are in the world by now, I've got some real growing up to do.

Wow. I love nursing school. We too lost several students but I'm totally enjoying this learning experience. Mind you, the students we lost were because they failed one or several courses--and all of them because they didn't show up for all the classes and just generally slacked off. My class is great too. We've got a great group of students who are extremely supportive of each other. Our instructors have said that they have never seen a class as 'tight' as ours is. And they want us to succeed and go out of their way to help us and are always available for remedial help if needed. They're extremely supportive and I've sat down with instructors to talk and also to the Director of Nursing--it's that comfortable! Sure I'm stressed a lot (esp last semester when I had such a heavy course load) but I hung in there and managed it. Not bad for someone out of school for 30 years! I'm in a diploma program that's been around for 102 years...with even the piccys of the old classes in the hallways to prove it. It's been a great experience for me and I'm proud of myself to have achieved what i have so far being a non-traditional (aged) student.

Cheers

I'd probably like it, too if I were in your school. Is a diploma program even college? Are you sure we're not comparing apples and oranges here?

It's interesting to see that a lot of people feel the same way I do. I read a book once called "Intensive Care" by Echo Heron. She went to nursing school in the early 70s and her description sounds exactly like my experience. I suppose it's just the way it has to be. If it were easy, what would happen when we hit the floor?

I do think it's easier, or will be easier, to be a nurse than a nursing student. I say that, because I work in a hospital and I see what it is like. If nothing else, at least I'll be able to come home after a shift and just leave work at work.

As most of you know, I don't intend to get a BSN, but I will do whatever study I need to for a CCRN, or RNC. But at least that will be on my own schedule.

For the record, I love nursing, but I'm hating nursing school. May seems so far away--so far away.

My diploma program is a hospital-based nursing school and some courses you take at associated colleges in the area. It has consistently received accreditation from NLNAC. And what are you referring to with your statement "is a diploma program even college? Do you have to attend 'college' to prepare yourself for the NCLEX and get your well-deserved RN? We are well prepared after our intense 3-year program to take the NCLEX.

Suzy,

Without going into details, ADNRN is a trouble maker and an instigator and if you take a few minutes and do a search on this posters previous postings, you'll realize that it's not even worth your time to respond. I've stayed away from most of this persons threads but I hate to see someone innocent drawn into the drama that is always created.

Anyways, best of luck to you (and all of us) in our courses and clinicals ... :kiss

I remember during nursing school how tired I got of the same people always complaining. Yes, nursing school is stressful just like the profession. Any degree program has it's pain in the neck courses and projects to be completed.

We all have our stories to tell of the hardships we have gone through during school. If you want it, then do it. If it is too hard, then quit. It is that simple.

Most diploma programs are now associated with either a 2 year degree program or a 4 year degree program. If the program is independent, the nurses earning a diploma have transferable credits they can use to either complete their 2 year or 4 year degree.

Back in the days when I was in LPN school, there were many diploma programs and I will tell you those nurses knew their stuff. Plenty more time spent in the trenches learning and doing, while the ADN and BSN students spent time in the classroom reading books. After I graduated as an LPN, those diploma RN's taught me a lot and I will be forever thankful for the education I received from them.

While everyone on this board who knows me, knows that I advocate BSN as entry-level for nursing, I will always have a high level of respect for the diploma graduate.

If you would have told me you were insulted, then I would have apologized. So please accept my apologies. (Can I use the excuse I'm working 20 hours of overtime, waiting for all frustrated student to hurry up and finish and come help me out?)

Yes, you do have some growing up to do.

(Then again so do I.)

Some people think an ADN isn't a "college degree" either. Don't be so arrogant, they take the same RN state boards as you do.

I am just waiting for the day when I can walk onto a floor as a student and the charge nurse does NOT give you a dirty look! Sometimes I really hate being a student because seems like most of the nurses treat us like we are invisible (at least at some of the hospitals I have been at). But can someone tell me what part in the program did you feel like a 100% confident nurse? I am just so scared that I am no where near that feeling, (I am only about 1/2 through)......But I NEED some reassurance man! I think as nursing students, we all need some sometime. Thanks for letting me vent!
