Hunting For A School In New York City (Accelerated RN Program)

Hello Friends,

I was referred to this site by my sister, an RN at Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack NJ. I am following in her footsteps and would like to find a school in NYC. I have googled, used education connection sites and am overwhelmed by the number of search results. I did find one school that seemed to be just the right fit but they only start classes once a year in September. I am hoping for a winter semester starting January. I guess I am looking for a flexible fit. I'm interested in an accelerated program (2 Year) and full time school is not a problem for me. I thought living in the NYC area, this would be a piece of cake for me. Boy was i wrong! So I thought I'd register here and post a plea for help. I'm a bright young man looking to start life anew and I know this profession is the right one for me. If anyone can help by suggesting schools or other means of finding schools I would be very grateful. Again looking to start January 2010. I don't know much about NYC as I live on the other side of the US, but I do know most programs require pre-requisites. Have you looked into those? Typically it covers Anatomy and Physiology, Microbiology, and in some cases Chemistry and other classes.

yes this is a good point. i did get accepted to a school in NJ a few years ago but declined to continue as I was torn between school and coninuing the carrer I had currently. The program combined all of that in two years. But this is good information to know in the case I can't find my school of choice for January. At least I could get a start and not be idle.

I am in NY and just started clinicals. You will need to start looking into schools ASAP. Most schools will have a waiting list for at least 1 year, and in most cases more than one year. High GPA won't help since almost everyone trying to get into the program will have a 4.00 GPA. I waited for a whole year after being accepted into the nursing program before they had room for me to start clinicals. I have a BS in Biology and that really didn't matter.

What about NYU?

IIRC, there are only three of four such programs in NYC. LIU, NYU, College of Mount St. Vincent (located in Riverdale, but second degree BSN program nursing classes are offered at sites in Manhattan).

It is really difficult to judge a program on paper, but rather one needs to contact each school and obtain an information packet and perhaps arrange a visit. Most schools also have open houses for persons interested in attending as well.

As another poster stated you will need to find out entry requirements including any math and science pre-reqs.

Most all programs will require Chemistry (general and perhaps Organic),Anatomy and Physiology. Microbiology amoung others. If you have not taken these classes, you either must complete them before you can apply or enter into the formal nursing program, other programs include them.

Second degree BSN programs mainly allow persons already holding a four year college degree to skip much if not all non-nursing credits and concentrate on nursing and core classes. In essence it is almost like being a transfer student and exempted from taking certian classes because of previous college work.

Look also if the program or programs you are interested in require you to take certian exams as part of your entry process. The NLN, amoung others is only given certian times of the year, and if you have missed a chance at one for Spring 2010 entry, you will have to wait.

All and all if you wish to enter a program this coming Spring, you better get cracking NOW! Fall 2009 students have already begun in most cases.

I live in NY, my school is New york city college of Techonology located in Brooklyn, 300 jay st.Nursing dept.#1718-260-5660, They have a 2 year associate and 4 year BSN program. and they accept every semester.

The only problem is you do not get in right away, first of all , at least you have to take atleast one class , prior to getting to Nursing dept. Then you have to take NLN( National League of Nursing) exam, and you need very high score + there are 4 prerequsite course you need to take ( english part 2, Pychology,

A &P p.1,and higher level Math). then they see your GPA and the NLN course and if you scored high you get in right away. if not they put you in waiting list.But if you already took some of th courses , then they just transfer it.

Sometimes getting in nursing school is very hard, for some their dream was crushed , because of compition and high expectation in your GPA and NLN score. Good Luck to you, but for more info call the # above or stop by the school, take the A or F train and get off at Jay street.

also I think UMDNJ in Jersey has an accellerated program
