How often are you called off?

I was just called off for over staffing for the first time in 6 years at my current hospital. Typically they bring everyone in and float someone but I guess there were no other needs. Not complaining! I was glad but didn't know what to do with myself. Just curious how often others get called off.

It all depends! We have a "request for cancel" book where you can write your name in on days you would like to be cancelled, and if census is low they will call you before they call anyone else. I put my name in the book pretty often, the supervisors know I am always willing to be called off! I would say I get cancelled once or twice a month, but only because I request it--other nurses haven't been canceled in a year or more. On the bright side, I haven't been floated since January!

I haven't had a full paycheck since December. We are being canceled once per pay period and floating usually once per week. It's been crazy. Last year I never got canceled!

I was called off once. Ironically, I had just put in my resignation notice during the previous shift, and it seemed well accepted. The next night I was to report for work, I made the 30 mile drive, went to clock in, and lo and behold my name wasn't on the staffing sheet. Sure, census was down, BUT I was the only RN on my unit, LOL. One of the reasons I quit actually was because my shift was the only med-surg shift with one RN (me) and a bunch of LPNs. I can't remember who they had working that night, but I turned around, walked out, called the next day, rescinded my notice period, and told them I'd send the hospital ID back certified letter once my final pay was deposited (which I did). I so badly hated that place.
