How exactly does the BON know we completed credit education hours?

So I just finished completion of CEUs for my renewal, my question is how does BON know if you completed them or not?

How do people get audited?

I think it may differ from state to state, but as far as I know most audits are random. In my state, they wont ask for proof of certification unless you get audited. They may keep better tabs on someone who has been audited before and not been able to produce the proper certifications.

In my state they do the random audit as well. Since those offering approved CE courses need a provider number they have a way to verify your info if they need to.

Random audits for the win! :) As a paramedic I have always had to obtain 72 hours of CEUs every two years since 2003, and I always made sure to have my documentation in case of audits. Kind of like when you file your taxes. (Thankfully the paramedic hours have changed a little and I had more latitude about what I could count this year!)

In Georgia, maintaining my board certs (CEN, CPEN, TCRN) means that they accept those as a sign that I have enough CEUs to renew. Many states accept board certs in lieu of CEUs.

I got audited and even though I had my hours I nearly peed myself when I got the notification. BTW check your State's BON to see how far back they can go. Mine can go back 7 years!!!!

I could never NOT meet the requirements!!! It would drive me insane! I can be loosy goosy in mnay areas of my life, but that is one area that I have religiously taken care of since the day I got my license a million years ago!

There have been several posts here on AN from nurses who were audited and for whatever reasons, had problems producing the required documentation. Very angst producing.

There's that question on renewal applications that ask re the required CEU hours. I guess the BONs could just randomly pull off from that question. I doubt there would be any applicant who might answer "NO" to the question's fulfillment. But then I suppose someone could do so.
