How did you pick an area to work in?

I'm a new grad and right now looking for a job in pretty much any area I can just to get experience. Finding a job is pretty much impossible right now so this isn't the time to be picky. I was wondering how does a new RN pick an area to work in if they like several areas (if I was to have a choice in the future). When I started school I thought I would want to go straight into Mother/Baby or L&D but now I'm not so sure. I still like it but I don't know if I would get bored after the same thing over and over. I didn't think I would like Med/Surg but I ended up really liking it. One thing I really liked about Med/Surg is that you get different types of patients all the time.

I was just wondering how everyone picked the area they currently work in. Was it the area you thought you would like before starting nursing school? Thanks!

Specializes in Med-Surg.

I got stuck in med-surge b/c I signed a contract with the hospital while I was in school. It was the only floor with an opening. Been stuck there ever since, and just don't have the guts to go elsewhere. Not really sure what I would do though, if I did get to choose.

I got tired of the floor, and got into MDS nursing.

I went where my friend was working. That lasted a few months then she got transferred to another unit. So high school. Do not fret over this. Your first 1-2 years is all about learning to be a nurse. So wherever you are planted, GROW. It is like falling in love. You will know when it is right.

Specializes in ER.

wherever you start out at, you can always move to another area. If you don't like it, try another specialty. That's the joy of nursing - there's no need to get bored, there are always options. Well, right now there might be limited options.... =) I chose Med-Surg to gain overall experience and then moved to the ER, which was my plan from the beginning.

I think it's great to shake things up, to challenge yourself - getting stuck isn't an option... for me. I can see where you get comfortable... but there's so much out there to learn - so many other areas of nursing to explore!

True, I will agree. Contract was over a year ago. But, I love my co-workers, and I have great bosses that are good to me. Just not sure if I'm ready to leave it, even if it does get me off med-surg :p

Never, ever let fear limit you.

Do not be afraid of change.

Embrace new adventures.

Seek new experiences.

If you have this attitude, and look at obstacles as challenges one can overcome, you will have a great outlook on your career.
