Hey Guys! I have been in LTC and HH for over 1.5 years. I have decided to go thru excelsior and get my RN! Yeah!!!

Well, I also decided to go to a local hospital for med/surg r/t the almost non clinical experience r/t excelsior. I have my first interview on wednesday, and I have to admit I am a little intimidated! I know there are things that I have forgotten, and things that other nurses around will be like "were did you graduate?????" So, what would you suggest in the interview for me to say, besides the above, to get the job? From what I understand, I will be going against several other candidates, with hospital experience, and I WANT THIS JOB!

And not to start anything, but I wish terribly that I would have went ahead and went to med/surg instead of HH, regardless of the extra money.

I wish you the very best of luck with your journey to learn more skills and complete RN school along the way. I, too, live and work in Texas, but money is too important of an issue to me. Therefore, I cannot accept the low starting wages paid by the hospitals even though the acute care hospitals will likely expose me to all situations and abundant skills. I admit that I am not learning a whole lot in the nursing home setting, but it pays decently and I am fond of what I do.

just be really honest about how much you want the job and why. it sounds as if you're really motivated, and i'm sure that will shine through. good luck!

I was too...worked in LTC for 4 years then had to go back to hospital due to cut backs at the LTC...thought for sure I would be out of it~! BUT NO! I actually retained more than I ever thought, and I have always been brave enough to ask questions when I don't! That was much more appreciated than if I just went in and acted like I knew it all!

Of course, my facility honors this fact...that all RN's have different experiences, individual thoughts/feelings, and different levels of training...so for me it was a great experience! (well last night kinda sucked...they put me down in PCU where I had never been or ever worked in my life...and I had to stick up for myself and say I wouldn't take on a pt load AT ALL! It did work, and no one was mad!).

Ask questions PRN, be open to learn again...and for me..that was FUN! So great going back actually, and I never thought it would be! I love it!

I had been out of clinical nursing for 30 years before I went back just 2 months ago.

I had actually retired from an occupational health career and found myself bored so I took a 200 hour RN refresher course, a 35 hour IV Therapy course and my BLS. I interviewed at my local hospital and was offered a job on the Medical Unit.

I have now been working for 2 months and love it. The staff I work with is very supportive...to a person, I think they want to see me succeed. They go out of the way to find me if they are going to do a procedure that they know that I need experience with (NG tubes, IVs, Foleys etc.).

Just do it...

I will indeed miss the HH paycheck, actually I will be having 2 jobs not even make what I did at the one, but hey, gotta do what I gotta do! Thanks again!
