Fumbling round in the dark looking for my mind but I am pretty sure I have lost it.

Here is a really big vent. I am a 1st year nursing student.... I am not sure I want to be a nurse anymore. I have had sooooo many horrible experiences with nurses in the last two years that i am pretty sure I have lost any visiion on what it is to be a "good" nurse. I had been sick enough to be hospitalized off and on for the past two years with major infections such as endocarditis etc. (while trying to go to uni). They (Dr's) couldn't figure out what was wrong so they did so many tests and blah blah blah asking questions "do you do IV drugs. you know all the industry standard q's My smart a@@ answers UM actually now that you mention it Yeah I do IV drugs When they are given by a qualified medical professional.....anyways logs story short last hosp was due to horrible N/V with 20lbs of wt loss (usually only weigh 120lbs) final diag. Cholelithiasis etc. got gall bladder out on 17 of may and still in horrible pain if I have to tell my dr that "somthing else is not working" i might just freak out because all she does is admit me to hosp where all of the nurses that were unprofessional, cold hearted and down right rude and got fired for "accidentally" making drug errors now work. I really just need to vent and stuff. I have an appt. with the surgeonto get the staples out today It is almost 4am but i cant sleep I am seroiusly losing my marbles

Ouch! so sorry you are going through this {{{{{{{Danianne}}}}}} :o

Could be the stress of so much illness is making nursing look so bad? We've got rotten apples like anyone else, but there are a lot of good folks in our profession too. What are your instructors like? Would a different school and different clinical settings help? Please don't be too hasty to abandon nursing altogether: patients need somebody who's "been there, done that" and can really empathise.

Would a semester off be feasible? Good luck in whatever you choose to do. :flowersfo

Well, nursing school alone is enough to put a person over the edge with all the stress and all. But there is one thing I see in this picture and it is the very reason you SHOULD be a nurse! :) Because we need more smart nurses who know how to take care of people correctly and with compassion. With the shortage even the best nurses get worn down and uncompassionate at times.

But if your heart is truly not in it then this would be the time to get out for sure because it is one heck of a tough job:rolleyes:

From now on out, I wish nothing but good for you and that you search your heart and listen to it, it will tell you the answer if you listen.
