Can anyone tell me why Excelsior College graduates are having a hard time finding jobs? With the nursing shortage why are hospitals not hiring these nurses? They take the same NCLEX and pass it. So what is the problem? Any ideas or thought's on this subject? Thanks, Terry

A consistant theme in your posts is that I don't listen and make overly broad statements. I may be guilty of that but, then, so are you, as well as some of the other posters. I don't think the issue is just about listening, but also about intent.

When debRNo1 selectively deleted this key quote of mine: "Regardless, I do hope I am wrong and I hope it works out for you" --- with the obvious intent of making me look bad --- that was pretty outrageous. I mean, we all edit quotes, but usually not completely out of context, which was what she did there.

I don't care who it is at that point: RN or not, I have a hard time taking someone like that seriously.

As for our disagreements:

You accused me of making the overly broad statement that no hospitals would hire new Excelsior grads when, in fact, I said some wouldn't, not all, and in the end it may not matter much with the current shortage.

You jump on me for not fully reading the document which mentioned the 12 schools that supposedly "had" to change their cirriculum. I check the document, and it turns out it's all routine reports to the state board, nothing more.

You make the broad statement that Excelsior students are getting jobs in "all the other states" when, in fact, that same document -- which you claimed to have read so carefully -- shows that some states do not license new Excelsior grads.

And, of course, we have Heather and debRNno1 making the "bonehead" comments, which doesn't exactly present a persuasive case.

What, exactly, am I supposed to be learning? The fact is, I am listening most of the time, but much of it doesn't seem to hold up to any amount of scrutiny.

Just because I don't accept everything at face value, doesn't mean I'm not willing to listen to a good argument. I just don't think I've heard a really good argument yet.

If you want to dismiss the BORN action as just "a couple of documents," then I guess you haven't had much experience with state agencies. Board minutes don't begin to describe the mountains of documents that agencies typically prepare for board meetings, much less major investigations and enforcement actions.

The documentation on that case is probably quite substantial. The fact that it's not all posted on the internet is no indication of the true status of documentation in that case, by any means.

Actually, you're right.

I am a Paramedic in Florida looking into the RN program at Excelsior College. I would like to hear from a EC graduate that has gone through getting in to practice if Florida the "back door" way of taking another state's NCLEX and then applying for endorsement. Is this possible. I have called Florida's BON and they were clueless (at least the people I talked to). I didn't think the BON would validate the "back door" way but was just looking for answers. I was even looking into challenging the LPN test after a certain point in Excelsior's course.

I am a recent EC grad with EMT-P to RN bridge. i live in NC so cannot address the FL issue but if you have other questions im glad to help

hi medicplusrn,

this is my goal. i will be vested with my fire department's pension 3/2008 and looking to get out of south florida and move to nc (yes, another floridian coming your way). worst case is i can't practice in florida even after attempting to endorse in....i have to move to nc. does nc have any "issues" with ec?

if you don't mind me asking, how much are rns (er, tele) getting per diem?

thanks

if you pass the nclex and have a license in another state, florida will endorse you, period. it doesn't matter where you went to school, or that you were a paramedic. you cannot sit for nclex in florida unless you're an ec grad/lpn.

so you can get endorsement. that's a definite yes, at least at this time. i called the bon and spoke to their nursing consultants. i'd suggest you enroll now so you don't miss a potential cutoff date, lest the rule changes.

The people who have resorted to name calling are Excelsior students or grads, who are upset that the facts don't always jive with their agenda.

I guess that's to be expected, although the name calling is rather lame.

IMHO, when people resort to name calling, they lose credibility.

IMHO when people slam a program they know nothing about nor have any experience with, yet talk like they do, they lose credibility as well.
