im 50 years old and i would like continue do cna work should my age stop me? or should it stop anyone else who wants to continue doing cna work? also what is a positive thinking cna?

My best friend is almost 60. She works five 12hour shifts. Nothing is stopping her, certainly not her age. She worked in OB for awhile, then transferred to the extremely busy Cardiovascular floor. Now she's working in the ER. She loves to work and when she's at work, she WORKS! Keep your head up. Age is a state of mind. If you can do it, go for it. :pumpiron:

You are not quite as old as I am, but you have even more years of experience. I think that should be advantageous.

I worked some LTC after turning fifty, and kept up pretty well. I did work with another aide my age, and they had to let her go. She was good, just could not hack the physical part.

Try getting work in a hospital. It is not as grueling physically. More variety too, keeps you sharp!

I will warn you, it is difficult getting considered in hospitals with no hospital experience. I have had no luck, but you have more years. That may help.

I don't know if age is a problem in being considered. I am 54.

What makes a positive thinking CNA? It helps to love the patients, and love the work. A desire to learn, and understand what is going on around you and doing some research on the side to help you "work smart", that keeps it interesting! I think CNA work appeals to people who like team work. You better like being with people alot, that makes my day.

i don't think age should hold you back and if you ever need a hand transfering a pt bed to chair or whatever just find another aide or the pt's nurse.

to me a positive cna understands clearly that they are there FOR the nurse. to make the nurses day run smoother. that's why most nurses love working with me..they say do this and it's done, if i can anticipate their needs i act before being told, and they know i will take care of their pts to the best of my ability. also, you have to understand that you just can't do everything, but at least do your best. that's what keeps me going. if i don't get to turn a pt...well i know it's not because i was taking a break..it's because i was working and working hard.

I'm surprised you haven't been flamed for this, with someone saying "CNA's there for the patient, not to make the nurses day run smoother." There is some justification for them to feel this way, because many nurses would take advantage of a CNA whose focus is on the nurse, not the patient, and become lazy. I'm sure you've come across those.

The nurse/CNA should be a team, helping one another provide the best possible care for the patient/resident. A positive thinking CNA never forgets who is the manager of that care, who sets the priority, who does the delegation. But never forgets they are all there for the patient. (Now time for me to put my flame suit on. LOL)

I shouldn't stop you. Depends on your general health and motivation. Some people are old, obese and have multiple health problems at 50. Some can run circles around people twice their age. CNA is tough work. Good luck!

Heck, I don't see myself being a nurse at 50 because it has already taken a physical toll on me and I don't want to ruin myself for things later on...but for some reason...I just don't see myself NOT being a nurse..LOL! As long as I can mentally and physically handle the job...well, then I will do it! LOL lord help me..LOL!

Well, it would be hard to argue against the point that Nursing Assistants are there to assist the nurse (EXCUSE MY REDUNDANCY!) ;) ! Wouldn't that be putting the emphasis on the A## in ASSistant?

Yep, we would be unemployed if there were no nurses to assist. Now if they come up with a new NA job (nursing aggravator) my employment opportunities would sky-rocket!
