Changes in personality since you became a nurse?

I was just curious to find out from those who have received either their RN or LPN, if they've undergone some personality trait changes. Primarily, before going to nursing school you were more on the quiet side, shy maybe, if after time working as a nurse, you're surprised at how you may have changed...

I have noticed I do not have the patience to hear people drone on an on about a topic without getting to the point. I want action! It comes down to time and nurturing: I do so much nurturing at work and have so little time to myself there that at home I crave peace.

Hmmm...

I guess I'm less patient with healthy people who have insurmountable and continuous personal problems. And I tend to stay away from argumentative people too--same reason.

Just don't wanna hear the constant whining. I wanna say, "So get up off your butt and do something constructive already."

I also see way less sense in getting angry over much of anything; it depletes me emotionally, and it usually has a negative effect on whatever I'm trying to achieve.

So while some think I'm a Pollyanna type, what they don't know is that I became this way after much effort wasted in other directions. And I'm waaaaaaay happier this way. betcha i live longer too ;)

Ditto on that...and my family knows it...details first, get to the point in 25 words or less...then elaborate.

I was also a much more passive person when it came to my own needs, rights & opinions.

I totally agree with purplemania and kids-r-fun. Get to the point already. I also would have to fess up to becoming a lot more anally retentive. I crave organization, probably do to the total chaos of working on a surgical floor.

I guess this is what I was looking for...how many nurses were of a more passive personality before and how they changed.

BTW, kid-r-fun, little Dylan is looking pretty good. I like that you have his picture as your avatar and letting us see his progress. Hope Dylan and your daughter are doing better!

I'm still in school and I have already noticed a couple of subtle changes...I speak up more readily now...I am less "timid"...I have a bit more confidence in myself since I've done some "nursing procedures" and survived...things that some people think they could NEVER do I can...you know? Can't wait to see what other changes are on the horizon ! :D

I'm more assertive & more outgoing than I used to be ( I used to be on the shy side). I also learned how to say "no" without guilt.

Being a nurse does change you.

Oh and cocktail hour conversations are quite different when you are a nurse!! The darndest things are funny now!!!

I'm in the same mode as ya'all. Less patient with trivel moaners, some of my family do not think I'm listening. Imbarassed to tell them I'm not. Lots more grateful for suff like simplicity. Matter of fact I'm in love with simplicity. Warped humor-- oh, my--sometimes what comes from my own mouth and out of my own mind is scary.
