Hello fabulous nurse ladies and gentlemen. This week I got the most exciting email of my entire life. I have been nominated into the Peace Corp! I am a student now, and will have to take and pass my NCLEX before I leave. Now I am unfamiliar with CEUs. If I am not working as an RN (but I will be registered in the state of Illinois or Georgia) how do I keep my liscence valid while I am gone for 27 months? Is that possible, do I need to do CEUs, how many, how do I do them... etc. Also, if anyone has been in the PC i'd love to hear about it!

Nobody can help me? Pleasee. Any info about CEUs?

There are CEUs available online and via snail mail.

I know little about the PC, but congratulations & thank you for serving others.

Georgia does not require any ceus. Not sure about Illinois. You can do ceu credits and renew your license via mail or Internet. Congratulations on the PC! Do you know what country you will go to or what kind of nursing? I'd live to hear about it!!!!

I'm not sure where I am going yet. I have to go meet with doctors and lawyers and all that jazz, and then they place me. I am extreamly excited. If Georgia does not require CEU's I will def get licensed there. Thank you guys!

Be sure to check the board for each state. They may have requirements regarding keeping your license while not practicing as a RN. For instance, in Tx, one can put the license inactive if not practicing, and then update with CEU's and a reactivation fee to do so. And, also be sure to check if there is anything that would put you in jeopardy (I wouldn't think there is) if you don't practice as a RN so soon after passing NCLEX. Again, in some states, if you don't practice as a RN for x number of years, you must take a refresher course before you can. Good luck to you in the PC and take care. If you've never lived overseas before, you are in for an experience!
