After the recall of Darvon products, I'm wondering how some of the MD's that I work with will deal with the prescription issue tomorrow....

You know how surgeons get a little set in their ways? (OK, maybe alot set in their ways.) Several surgeons that I work with only ever prescribe Darvocet. Have a wart removed? Here.....have some Darvocet. Have a joint replaced? Here....have some Darvocet.

I'm convinced that most of them have forgotten any pharmacology that they ever knew and only write for one drug because it's all they know or can remember. As for keeping up with any newer anagesics - forget it! Assuming that they even notice the recall, I'm thinking about how tomorrow will play out, particularly since most surgeons in my area no longer have RN's on their staff to give them a little help in the area of prescribing post-op meds.

I can just see them now, pens poised over their script pads, eyes frantically searching around for the nearest RN......."Excuse me - can you suggest something for me to give my post-op patient? Oh, and what's the dose? And if you don't mind, how often should they take it?"

Naaahhh....they won't be that polite. More likely..."Oh hell, I'll sign this script and you just write what you think my patient should have.":lol2:

I haven't heard of a doc using Darvon--at least around here in upstate NY--in a very long time.....

I was given a prescription for Darvocet just last month from the periodontist, never need to take one. Mother in law also had a recent script for darvocet after breast biopsy. So they are still in use. Tomorrow will be interesting!

I'm sure they have SOME idea... what did they do for patients allergic to darvocet?

We emptied ALL our narcotic cabinets on Friday of Darvocet. They'll have to get used to ordering something else. There was some talk of a substitution hospital wide for those MDs that just don't get it, the pharmacy will take care of changing the order.

What I can't help but wonder is what will happen to those people who walk into the ER twice a week with various sorts of pain that is 10/10 and are allergic to everything but darvocet.

I wonder if there are certain areas of the country where Darvocet is still commonly prescribed. I have yet to encounter it in my short nursing career.

Around here the ER frequent flyers shop dentists in their spare time to get vicodin for their "break through" pain;)
