EXCELSIOR COLLEGE UPDATE

Board of Registered Nursing

Education/Licensing Committee

October 17, 2003

The Education/Licensing Committee took the following action at its meeting on October 17, 2003:

"Approve the eligibility of Excelsior College graduates applying for licensure as an RN, provided that they meet the following requirements:

1. LVN with one year experience.

2. Must have 8 units or 360 hours of supervised clinical experience through a California approved program. The clinical areas required are to be in advanced medical-surgical nursing, psychiatric nursing, and geriatrics.

3. The practicums may be provided through the Open University option throughout California State University system, California Community College system, or through independent college system.

4. Comply with LVN to RN requirements under California law, Business and Professions Code Section 2736.6 and California Code of Regulations, Title 16, Section 1429.

Such eligibility requirements will apply to students who enroll at Excelsior College on or after December 6, 2003."

This recommendation will be presented by the Committee to the full Board at its meeting on December 5, 2003, for final action.

This is very good news.

I can think of no better way for us to get more qualified registered nurses than to assist licensed vocational nurses in earning their RN.

My experience was that the LVN program was much more difficult than the RN.

If this was decided on Oct 17- how come we are just hearing about it now?

And how do these requirements compare to the requirements before this decision? As you can tell I am looming into getting my RN and Excelsior is an option...

Thanks

Jess

Hi Jess,

This decision has been talked about and posted on the board site and the Excelsior site for a while now. In the beginning Excelsior reccomended appplying to the program before the first meeting, which was in Sept I think. Then the board had Excelsior to summit information to them by the Oct 17th meeting, and the above is what they decided to reccomend for Excelsior students in Cali.

The above reccomendations will only apply to those who register after the Dec 5th meeting, if the Cali BON decides to make this reccomendation offical. So if you apply now to Excelsior, you don't have to worry about the clinical requirements for the Cali BON, but other state boards have similar clinical requirements. In Washington state you have to do 200hrs of precepted clinical hours in order to take the NCLEX.

I hope I explained that correctly, but there has been a "sticky" on this BB for over a month now about this situation. I think the best thing to do, would be to talk with Excelsior or the BON personally, and find out where you would stand on this.

Brownie, anything new about this?
