Attention OB or pediatric nurses

Not sure if this is okay to ask on this forum, but I need some assistance from any OB nurses or peds nurses. I am in nursing school and we have a project for tomorrow. We have to present some Community Resources to the class (as if they were parents of a newborn). I guess I can do a print out and pass this out to the class. Does anyone know of a good web site where I can find good community resources for new parents? Any specific topics in general that should be covered? Financial resources? WIC? Food stamps? Psychological support? Education classes? Not sure. I know from working in a hospital or pediatrician's office, you may have experience handing out information of this sort to new parents. Any info within the next couple of hours would be greatly appreciated, thanks!!

I'll be honest...doing the research is the reason why they gave you the assignment.

The purpose is to teach you one aspect of discharge planning...not everyone that goes home with a new baby will have a healthy one...they may even need community resources if their baby is in the NICU or didn't make it.

I would see if your local health department has a website and also try the chamber of commerce.

Pull up every website of every hospital in your area and see if they have links available to other resources.

A printout is not going to be acceptable to your instructors...nor will it be acceptable to the patient and/or family...you have to be able to at least give a 2 sentence description of what these places have to offer and know who to refer where.

The referrals should be appropriate and specific to that patient and the family.

The referrals should be local in nature and accessible to the patient. Other things like support groups, special financial assistance, etc. The Department of Social Services does a lot more than just take children away from parents...regardless of income they have a host of support features on parenting...and you don't have to be an abuser or court ordered to take these classes...they offer them to the general public...this may be beneficial to a single mother or someone who may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer or someone who is overwhelmed.

National referrals such as St. Jude's or March of Dimes is good, but local should always be your first stop.

PS: Come on...be honest...did they ONLY give you 1 day to do this assignment?

I didn't post this asking for snippy remarks. I have been doing the research. No, they gave us the assignment last week, but we also had a test to study for and take this Monday. It is just a 5-minute, simple, broad presentation. Something they said not to spend too much time on. This is general community resources for new parents. Not specific to an individual or an individualized care plan. I just wanted to find out basic topics I should be covering and wanted some opinions. I am not asking you to do my homework.

I did a community presentation on car seat safety. There is a lot of info on the web on that. It is important to me, because I see too many parents driving around the Texas area without children properly restrained.

It sounds like you already have many good ideas for community resources.

Taking the the car seat idea to the community resource realm, find out where your local families can go to get their car seats inspected for proper installation. Looks like that seatcheck.org has a resource to find place to do this. If it's just a quick 5 minute presentation like you say, talking about car seat safety and resources would probably take up enough time. You can also look into possible charities that provide car seats to new parents. I know that in Reno, they don't discharge newborns until the parents provide proof they're in possession of a car seat.

Thanks. Yes, I looked into this as well. Many hospitals either provide or can direct parents on where to get a free car seat. Sometimes the fire department or United Way will know as well.

No one on the forum has any problem helping anyone with homework assignments...as long as they can demonstrate that they have at least lifted a pinky finger to at least do some work on their own.

I never stated that your current project was to be individualized to a particular patient..I said that it was the purpose of the project FOR WHEN you start to do discharge planning on an individual basis.

You could try googling Isis Maternity. It is a business for new and expecting parents and has all sorts of resources in one retail location, such as lactation consultants, classes, mom and infant care products. It's pricey but endorced and recommended to new mothers by Beth Isreal Hospital and the other major teaching hospitals in Boston. Good luck and don't listen to negative comments.......that is the last thing you need while you are in nursing school trying to get all your work done!

Nope...read the original post. Not a word said about any research being done by the OP.

If you search the posts on this message board, you'll find that this is very common where a few students will post asking for others to do the research for an assignment.

I'm a student...not an RN...but before I ask a question this board asking for help, I make sure I have exhausted my resources.

Learning to do research is part of the educational process. If you don't learn how to do it, resourcefully, then you'll always be limited to only what you learned in school. Constantly expanding your knowledge throughout your career is what makes anyone, in ANY profession (not just nursing), successful.
