Not sure if this is okay to ask on this forum, but I need some assistance from any OB nurses or peds nurses. I am in nursing school and we have a project for tomorrow. We have to present some Community Resources to the class (as if they were parents of a newborn). I guess I can do a print out and pass this out to the class. Does anyone know of a good web site where I can find good community resources for new parents? Any specific topics in general that should be covered? Financial resources? WIC? Food stamps? Psychological support? Education classes? Not sure. I know from working in a hospital or pediatrician's office, you may have experience handing out information of this sort to new parents. Any info within the next couple of hours would be greatly appreciated, thanks!!
Okay, okay. I understand what people are saying about how students get on here at the last minute to have nurses do their homework for them. If my posting seemed to have reflected that, then I apologize. I typed it very quickly without a lot of thought I suppose. I have been on All Nurses a long time and have never asked for help, or even an opinion regarding any homework assignments. (At least to my knowledge!).
I actually have always done things on my own and never have asked for "help" because I truly want to learn. I have to learn and digest the material in order to keep my grades high. I have a 4.0 GPA in my first semester of nursing and so far a 93 average on the first two tests we have had.
The project was not a big time serious project. We only presented to the class for less than five minutes and we did fine today. An outstanding job! I had done a LOT of research prior to posting the question. We were told that we could use resources such as calling hospitals, talking to nurses, asking questions, etc. That is merely what I was trying to do when I posted. I had all of my info and research pretty much done, topics chosen, etc. I just wanted to ask some OB or Peds nurses, NOT students, if they included some of these topics on a handout to new moms. Just wanted to see if maybe I was leaving anything out. If my posting sounded like I wanted something other than that, then I am sorry. I am a very good student and no one has ever done my homework for me. I'm way too OCD for that, are you kidding me!! I have to do things myself... check... double check again... triple check. lol
Anyway, sometimes it is discouraging to get on AN and ask a simple question. I think some people just like to argue. Although, in all fairness I can see where frustrations lie if a lot of students are asking for their homework to be done.
All I can say is, I am very sorry I even posted the stupid thing now.
I'm glad the assignment worked out for you. Don't be afraid to ask for help just because of one experience.....nursing school can be very competative and as long as you know you are doing your best that is all that matters. Sounds like you are doing excellent in school and will be a wonderful nurse someday!

Lesley,
Thank you for your supportive comments. Some of the other responses kind of brought me down. It's people like you who give nursing a good name. I bet you are wonderful with patients and with therapeutic communication. :redpinkhe

Thanks Jill,
I meant it.....I do think nursing is a tough industry and I myself have had difficulty dealing with the way nurses treat each other. I actually have ADD (which is why I was on the site-looking for advice from other nurses regarding time management) and so I've had my share of struggles in this profession. But I do try to remind myself often that I am a good nurse and that I have changed the lives of many patients. The negative comments that we all are bound to recieve should just go in one ear and out the other! Don't let it get you down....

While AN members are usually quite willing to help students learn, we have had far too many who asked for extensive help with school assignments without having done much of the work themselves. It's generally a good idea for those requesting help to give a summary of what research tools they have already tried, what their thoughts are on the subject in question, and what, specifically, they are struggling with. It allows other nurses to freely contribute their help without feeling like they are robbing the student of the opportunity to learn.
It also helps to make requests in a timely fashion. I have to admit that I cringed when I saw that this assignment was due tomorrow. We have no shortage of folks who procrastinate and then present their quest as an emergency. I am not at all saying the OP was doing that, only that it is a common enough practice that, barring clarification, the thought does occur.
On the flip side, we do want students to be able to come here to ask their questions and learn from seasoned nurses without fear of ridicule or scolding.
The best approach is for everyone to understand that learning is interactive, with visible participation from the student being an absolute essential ingredient.
