Have any of you ever heard of an oatmeal / coumadin interaction . I know about spinich and other vit K foods, but oatmeal?

Nope, dont understand that one unless the patient is allergic to oatmeal to begin with.

No, I haven't. If you do find something about it, please post the link.

All I can think of is the fibre content of the oatmeal somehow affecting the absorption of the coumadin throught the stomach? A long shot I know.

But honestly, most of my patients took their coumadins at 1700hrs, so oatmeal never entered the equation!

Actually 1/2 cup oatmeal has 13 mcg of Vitamin K. In comparison 1/2 c cooked spinach has 342 mcg.

Thank you guys , Thanks p_rn I like that link . I had never heard of an interaction but was told my a pt's family he cant have oatmeal because he is on coumadin . Keeping in mind that this is the only thing the man will eat ! And he is losing weight . I had always been taught to tell pt to maintain their normal diet and the coumadin will be adjusted to their diet . Thanks again for the help ! :rotfl:
